Position Summary        

Is this position exempt from overtime pay?


Manage the work of plumbers, mechanics, trainees and helpers in the installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing and heating systems.  Require frequent visits to schools to diagnose major plumbing problems and to inspect existing projects in various stages of completion.  This position is considered essential personnel for responding to emergency situations, including inclement weather conditions.


Essential Duties & Responsibilities

Does this position have supervisory responsibilities?


1.     Plans, assigns, and inspects the work of all levels of employees involved in the installation, maintenance and    repair of plumbing and heating systems ensuring quality standards adhere to safety rules and regulations.

2.     Prepare estimates of materials, time and labor necessary to complete projects.

3.     Responsible for ensuring availability of adequate supplies and equipment upkeep.

4.     Evaluates requests for major repair work.

5.     Schedules and maintains testing/repair records for programs and systems, pressure vessels inspections, insurance certificates, and backflow testing and records.

6.     Responds to emergency situations as they arise.

7.     Coordinates with the Operation Division to train school-based personnel.

8.     Works closely with Environmental Issues Manager to coordinate the proper planning and execution of environmental concerns regarding the plumbing program such as underground storage tanks, lead, and water.

9.     Participates in the hiring of employees, employee evaluations, and manages personnel issues.

10.  Assists in the preparation of the plumbing program requirements for the Maintenance budget and the Comprehensive Maintenance Plan.

11.  Must provide own basic hand tools.

12.  Performs other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications

·  High school diploma or equivalency certificate. 

·  Appropriate vocational training and skills preferred.



·  Six (6) years of progressive experience in the field of plumbing and heating; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities deemed sufficient to prepare the applicant to successfully perform the duties of the position.

·  Two (2) years of management or supervision experience.

·  Water treatment, fire suppression and/or UST experience is preferred.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

·  Knowledge of plumbing and heating maintenance and repair methods for various manufacturers.

·  Ability to delegate, motivate, coach, and mentor employees.

·  Ability to adapt to changing needs and to meet deadlines.

·  Must be familiar with the proper procedures and regulations pertaining to hazardous materials.

·  Ability to read and interpret architectural/mechanical drawings and construction specifications.

·  Ability to employ business technology tools (e.g. E-mail, AACPS Intranet, electronic benefits enrolment tool, Microsoft Office Suite, etc.).

·  Satisfactory score on any tests required.



·  Valid Maryland Master's Plumbing license.  License must be maintained throughout employment.

·  Valid Maryland Class (C) driver's license, plus proof of a good driving record.  Must have daily access to reliable transportation.

Physical Requirements


·  Ability to move, and position self to move in, under, over or through equipment, and work in confined spaces.

·  Ability to ascend and descend a 40' vertical ladder, and work at heights on aerial lift, scaffolding, bucket truck, and stepladder to perform all required tasks.

·  Ability to move a minimum of fifty (50) pounds.

·  Assignments may involve exposure to dust, dirt, noise, and extreme temperatures.

·  Assignments may involve exposure to chemical solutions, solvents, and odors.



·         Required to use safety devices and protective equipment in order to minimize the frequency and severity of work-related accidents. 

·         Adheres to safe practices and methods in the operation of equipment and supplies as it relates to the job.

·         The employee is responsible for correcting and/or reporting any conditions within an AACPS building or grounds that may be hazardous to employees and students.
