Job Description

The school counselor supports the academic success of all students by the development and management of a comprehensive school counseling program that is preventative in design and developmental in nature. Elementary school counselors plan, design and implement a school counseling program that is in alignment with national, state, local standards and individual school’s needs. Elementary school counselors deliver, manage and evaluate their services using the American School Counseling Association’s (ASCA) National Model as the guide. Elementary counselors function as leaders, advocates, collaborators and agents of systemic change in support of all students’ needs. Elementary school counselors help ensure that effective strategies are employed to encourage the maximum development of academic, career and personal/social goals of all students.

    Job Requirements

    • Meets Virginia requirements for certification with an endorsement as a school counselor to include a minimum of 100 clock hours of practicum experience in one setting (PreK-6 or 7-12) and an internship of 100 hours minimum in a different setting (PreK-6 or 7-12). For school counselors without previous counseling experience, it is recommended that the internship have been completed at the elementary school level.
