POSITION SUMMARY

The Teacher Development Specialist is accountable for supporting a caseload of teachers by providing individualized feedback, coaching, and development to improve teacher performance and increase student achievement.


RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES

• Observes instructional practice and provides a formative assessment of strengths and weaknesses.
• Provides real-time feedback and access to relevant development opportunities.
• Provides critical “on-the-job” coaching to teachers in support of their professional development.
• Works with teachers and principal to review performance data and development plans, identifies teachers’ strengths, and prioritize most pressing development needs to increase student achievement.
• Helps to identify and connect teachers to appropriate PD opportunities to meet priority needs.
• Monitors teachers’ efficacy in applying new skills and impact on student learning, adjusts approach as necessary to achieve goals for teacher improvement and student achievement.
• Provides input to the primary appraiser as one input into the appraisal process.
• Partners with principal and teacher interventionists to ensure focus is aligned to development priorities for individual teachers and across the district.
• Collaborates with principal and teacher interventionists to think strategically about PD (e.g., review performance data, reflect on themes, determine how to aggregate and prioritize needs, and allocate resources accordingly).
• Taps into school-based resources to deliver PD support (e.g., mentoring, modeling, facilitation, training, etc.).
• Leads group learning opportunities focused on increasing teacher effectiveness in a specific area.
• Identifies high need training topics to develop high value training and delivers training where appropriate and able.
• Improves teachers’ instructional, content, and developmental expertise on an ongoing basis by participating in research-based learning opportunities.
• Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


EDUCATION & WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

• Bachelor’s degree required; master’s degree preferred
• 5 to 7 years of proven successful teaching experience as demonstrated by a track record of success in increasing student achievement.
• Minimum of 5 years teaching experience in Early Childhood.
• Exceptional interpersonal skills.
• Able to relate one-on-one and in groups with confidence and poise.
• Ability to provide critical and constructive feedback to effect immediate change.
• Highly analytical and able to interpret data and weigh multiple options.
• Strong communicator, ability to write clearly and analytically, and able to evidence support.
• A problem solver and able to prioritize multiple scenarios.
• Ability to model research-based teaching strategies.
• Self-starter, flexible, able to adapt and adjust quickly to changing situations and needs.


LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES

No supervisory or direct people management responsibilities. May provide occasional work guidance, technical advice and training to staff.


WORK COMPLEXITY/INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT

Work is substantially complex, varied, and regularly requires the selection and application of technical and detailed guidelines. Independent judgement is required to identify, select, and apply the most appropriate methods as well as interpret precedent. Position regularly makes recommendations to management on areas of significance to the department. Supervision received typically consists of providing direction on the more complex projects and new job duties and priorities.


BUDGET AUTHORITY

No budget development activity is required.


PROBLEM SOLVING

Decisions are made with greater freedom and discretion including recommendations that are subject to approval on matters that may affect multiple departments across the district. Job is frequently expected to recommend new solutions to problems, to improve existing methods/procedures/services and generate new ideas. May also review decisions made by other individuals on more routine matters.


IMPACT OF DECISIONS

Decisions have moderate impact to the facility/department or division, causing increased satisfaction or dissatisfaction; producing efficiencies or delays; promoting or inhibiting personal intellectual or professional development; and/or contributing to financial gain or expense. Errors may be serious, usually not subject to direct verification or check, causing loses such as improper cost calculations, over-payment or improper utilization of labor, materials or equipment. Effect usually confined to the organization itself and is short term.


COMMUNICATION/INTERACTIONS

Collaborate and solve problems – works with others to resolve problems, clarify and interpret complex information/policies, and provide initial screening/negotiations without approval authority. Interactions are typically with customers, senior level professional staff, and managers.


CUSTOMER RELATIONSHIPS

Follows through with customer inquiries, requests, and complaints. Forwards difficult and non-routine inquiries or requests to appropriate level for resolution.


OTHER POSITION REQUIREMENTS

• Maintain regular attendance.
• Ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into focus; judge distance (close and distant); reach with arms extended and use hands to manipulate the keyboard, smart board and other classroom technology.
• Ability to lift/carry up to 25 pounds, including but not limited to: books, paper and instructional/office materials/supplies.
• This position requires frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, kneeling and/or the ability to be mobile.
• Ability to travel throughout the district and city as needed by means of personal/private or public transportation in compliance with the state’s department of motor vehicle and/or public transportation laws.
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned by the Director of Education/Principal.

• Knowledge of federal, state and local educational goals, objectives, accountability and compliance
• Knowledge of learning theory, program planning, curriculum and technology integration in the classroom and management of instructional programs
• Knowledge of statutory and regulatory requirements in area of responsibility
• Ability to plan and present information to a variety of audiences
• Ability to facilitate various size groups using facilitative leadership skills
• Skills in written and oral communication, planning, and organization
• Knowledge of current educational trends, methods, research, and technology
• In-depth knowledge of assigned program and service area
• Ability to collect, analyze and interpret data
• Strong proficiency with Microsoft Office products and ability to use technology
