QUALIFICATIONS:
Under the direct supervision of the Principal / Assistant Superintendent-Director, the Greater Lawrence Technical School Library/Media Specialist should possess the following qualifications:
  • DESE license as a library teacher
  • Completed a teacher preparation program/educational degree, and hold a master’s degree from a program accredited by the American Library Association or from a master’s level program in library and information studies.
  • Classroom teaching preferred
  • Technology applications and ability to use web tools and integrate Chromebooks into the curriculum

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as illustration of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Plans instruction that incorporates classroom and library curricula, the research process, and information/media literacy.
  • Plans instruction that incorporates Digital Citizenship.
  • Creates learning experiences by providing group and individual instruction, assessing student progress, and evaluating activities.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers as a partner in the instructional process.
  • Assists students and teachers in selection of reading and instructional materials.
  • Advocates and promotes reading and life-long learning.
  • Incorporates technology to enhance learning.
  • Manages and supervises the library facility.
  • Creates and maintains an environment conducive to learning.
  • Benchmarks the School Library Program (SLP) to school, state, and national standards.
  • Stays current in professional practices and educational research and disseminates this information to staff and students..
  • Participates in the recruiting and training of library volunteers.
  • Develops and maintains resources appropriate to the curriculum, the learners, and instructional strategies of the school community.
  • Establishes communication and networks with the area community public library staff including Lawrence, Methuen, Andover and North Andover.
  • Establishes procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing of material in all formats.
  • Promotes the ethical use of information: copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property.

    EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science; Bachelor’s Degree required.

    CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: Valid Massachusetts Teaching License as a Library Media Specialist is required.

    SKILLS AND ABILITY: (If applicable to instructional area.)

    LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; ability to effectively prepare lesson plans in accordance with district curriculum and the state Curriculum Frameworks. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of students, parents, teachers, and the general public.

    REASONING ABILITY: Must possess the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

    OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES: Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents; ability to work effectively with all staff at all levels of the school district; skills in oral and written communication is required.

    The Greater Lawrence Technical School is a regional technical high school serving the four communities of Andover, Lawrence, Methuen and North Andover. It is fully accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. The school is located in Andover in close proximity to colleges, business and industry. It is accessible by major highways and is situated in an area that has seen major growth of high-tech business and industry.

    Career Vocational and Technical Education (CVTE) is a major part of the educational experience that students receive at Greater Lawrence Technical School. Students spend almost 50% of their educational time learning technical skills and knowledge in a career path that will prepare them for employment prior to graduation. All our Career and Technical programs are approved Chapter 74 programs from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. The CVTE curricula associated with these programs have all been aligned with the Massachusetts CVTE Frameworks. Students enrolled in CVTE programs will be expected to attain the Certificate of Proficiency in their chosen CVTE program prior to graduation.

    Students entering freshman year at Greater Lawrence Technical School explore each career and technical program. Using resources such as career counseling and guidance from targeted support staff, students are able to make an informed decision when choosing their future path whether it be college or career. A full complement of student activities and athletics is offered throughout the school year.
