Job Summary


School Nursing is a specialized practice of Professional Nursing that advances the well-being, academic success, and life-long achievement of students. The purpose of school nursing is to enhance the educational process by the modification or removal of health-related barriers to learning by the promotion of an optimal level of wellness.

The registered, certified, school nurse has the unique distinction of being the only medical professional on the educational team and is a specialist in the health and care of children. The nurse is a valuable member of the school based community.

The nurse works within the scope of the Nurse Practice Acts according to the Massachusetts Board of Nursing Registration.

Responsibilities and Duties

• Responsible for conducting all necessary student and faculty health screenings as required by the Massachusetts Department of Education.
• Maintenance of confidential student health records.
• Maintenance of accurate records of student visits including reason and duration.
• Maintenance of confidential faculty health records.
• Responsible for coordination of student health modifications and documentation of individual health plans.
• Responsible for identification and assessment of student medical issues and coordination of necessary additional agencies for resolution and/or management.
• Responsible for home visits when necessary.
• Collaborate with the school physician, school psychologist and other school personnel when necessary
• Responsible for administration of medications in accordance with guidelines from the Board of
• Registration in Nursing, Massachusetts' laws, and protocols for Scituate Public Schools.
• Responsible for exclusion and readmission of students in connection with any student infections and contagious diseases and those lacking state-mandated immunizations and physical examinations.
• Collaborate with health education teachers and co-teaching when appropriate.
• Serve on Student Instructional Support, Individualized Education Plan and/or 504 teams, as needed.
• Communicates with parents, staff and administration.
• Participation in the School Health Advisory meetings.
• Collaborate with dietary staff for student nutrition and allergy issues.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee.

Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
• Valid state registered nursing license.
• Current state and/or national school nurse certification as required by state regulation.
• Two years nursing experience in child health (Discretion of the Superintendent of Schools).
• Current Certification in CPR and First Aid from recognized provider.
• Employment based on successful completion of a CORI background check and Fingerprint

    Hatherly maintains high-quality teaching and learning through a strong interdisciplinary curriculum in which subjects and skills are integrated and embedded through hands-on activities, inquiry-based instructions, and rich and multi-faceted projects. We offer an academically rigorous curriculum aligned with Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks, which focuses on achieving competence in all the areas of reading, writing, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts.

    Hatherly supports an inclusive philosophy of learning, offering heterogeneous classes, flexible instructional groups, and support services which are designed to meet the needs of students with diverse learning styles. Classroom teachers collaborate in grade level teams to develop curriculum, share instruction strategies, plan assessments, and review current research. Additionally, specialists work closely with classroom teachers to provide related services in Special Education, Remedial Reading, Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational and Physical Therapy and Adaptive Physical Education. Students also receive specialized instruction in Art, Music, and Physical Education on a weekly basis. As well, Hatherly prides itself in preparing technologically proficient students who are equipped with the necessary skills to succeed in the 21st century. Our Curriculum Lab houses a total of 32 computers, which all students have access to during their scheduled classroom times and throughout the week. Every classroom also has one or two student computers which offer opportunities for further practice, integration and advancement with our technology curriculum. Hatherly recognizes our responsibility in preparing students who are ready for the challenges of an ever-changing pluralistic society. Therefore, Character Education is strongly emphasized through the socio-emotional curriculum of the Open Circle School Competency Program and our Positive Behavior Interventions and Suppots Program. These core values are reinforced throughout the daily life at Hatherly.

    Hatherly benefits from an active parental community involved in our Parent Teacher Organization and School Council. These groups meet monthly to plan special events, organize fundraisers and develop school improvement goals. They are a vital and essential asset to our continued success. Some longtime activities and traditions at Hatherly School include: Family Pizza or Ice Cream Nights, Hatherly Holiday Breakfast, Hatherly Hoopla Fair, and Ship Shape Day.
