Job Description

Background on Brooke

Brooke Charter Schools opened Brooke High in August of 2016, and we are looking for exceptional educators to add to our founding 12th grade team who can help build a strong school culture focused on rigorous academics and developing strength of character.

Brooke Charter Schools, founded in 2002, are a network of five high-performing public charter schools in Boston. Our three K-7 schools in Roslindale, Mattapan, and East Boston enroll a total of 1,600 students; Brooke's 8th Grade Academy currently serves about 170 students and Brooke High School serves about 140 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. In August of 2018, BHS moved into a new state-of-the-art facility in Mattapan, where enrollment will eventually grow to about 600 students in grades 9-12.

Our mission is to provide an academically rigorous public education to students from the cities of Boston and Chelsea that will ensure that they are prepared to attend and succeed in college. Named after Senator Edward W. Brooke III, the first African-American popularly elected to the U.S. Senate, our strategy is to focus relentlessly on developing excellent teaching. Reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve, 56% of Brooke students self-identify as Black, 34% as Latinx, 6% Caucasian, 2% Asian, and 2% Native American or multiracial. About three-quarters qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Over the last several years, Brooke students have set a new bar for what is possible in urban public education, consistently producing results among the highest in the state.

The Role & Responsibilities

Teachers who thrive at Brooke High tend to be entrepreneurial instructors and hungry learners who crave frequent, high-quality feedback on their practice. They also have a great deal of passion and expertise in their content area that they are eager to share with students. The High School History & Literature teacher (with History Expertise) will partner with one other Grade High School History & Literature teacher (with Literature Expertise) to refine and teach the entire curriculum in reading, social studies, and writing.  The course is expected to cover American history and literature from prehistory to 1890. Students will complete this two-year course in their sophomore year by taking American History & Literature 1890 to present. Ideally, as many students as possible will take the Advanced Placement United States History test at the end of their sophomore year.  The History & Literature teachers will co-plan instruction with at least one other colleague who will teach the same course, and each will teach a two-period block class to two different classes, for a total student load of about 45-60 students; this low student load is designed to allow teachers to maximize feedback to students on their writing about both history and literature.

Each teacher is also responsible for serving as an advisor.  Advisors will serve as student mentors and parent communication liaisons for a small single gender group of students.  Advisories will meet twice daily; each day will begin with a short check in and end with a 25-minute advisory session.  Additionally, advisories will engage in weekly classes designed around college information and character education.

Teachers’ hours are 7:45-4:00 daily, with the student academic day running from 9:40-3:45 on Mondays and 8:00-3:45 on other days. Teachers may elect to lead an after-school extra-curricular club or coach a sport for an additional stipend.  In 2019, teacher PD will begin on July 18th.

A successful Brooke High School American History and Literature Teacher will ensure that all Brooke scholars feel challenged and known.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree
Minimum of two years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher (excluding student teaching, practicum, or international teaching experience)
Excellent interpersonal skills with students, parents, and colleagues
Commitment to ensuring academic success for all students
Shared dedication to Brooke’s mission and organizational values
Excellent teamwork, communication, initiative, urgency, and positivity

The community and students we serve are diverse, and we are committed to reflecting that diversity in our staff. We strive to have the most diverse applicant pool possible; to that end, we encourage individuals of all backgrounds to apply for any position at Brooke Charter Schools. By fostering a diverse and inclusive environment, we provide the best educational experience to prepare our students for a future reflective of the world in which we live.

  • Welcome to Brooke Charter Schools!

Brooke Charter Schools is a network of three K-8 public, charter schools dedicated to closing the achievement gap in the Greater Boston area. Brooke students are 98% minority and 78% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. For nearly a decade, we have steadily expanded to provide more and more students with the quality education they deserve. The original Brooke School (Brooke Roslindale) serves 475 students in grades K-8. In August 2011, Brooke opened a second school (Brooke Mattapan) in a temporary location in South Boston, serving 168 students in grades K, 1, and 5, with plans to grow to full size (475 students in grades K-8) by 2014. In August 2012, Brooke opened its third K-8 school (Brooke East Boston), which will follow the same growth trajectory. This rate of growth makes Brooke the largest and fastest growing charter school network in Boston. Over the last few years, Brooke scholars have set a new bar for what is possible at an urban public school. For the last three years, Brooke 7th and 8th graders have ranked among the highest performing districts in the state and have been the highest performing district in the state on at least one Math or ELA test.
