Job Description

The Ayer Shirley Regional High School is looking for a dynamic Social Studies teacher to serve as a long term substitute for 2019 - 2020 school year. In addition to being collaborative, and student-centered, the long term substitute will be comfortable with the implementation of the recently adopted 2018 Social Studies Frameworks. Specifically, the social studies teacher will recognize the guiding principles for effective history and social studies education, and the responsibility of connecting literacy skills to the curriculum.
Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Demonstrates competency in subject area(s).
  • Plans instruction effectively, including team planning time.
  • Provides effective assessment of student learning.
  • Monitors students’ understanding of the curriculum and effectively adjusts instruction, materials or assessments.
  • Works effectively and collaboratively with special education teachers, staff and specialists to make accommodations and modifications for those students identified as ELL or having a disability.
  • Applies classroom management techniques to establish a positive and productive learning environment.
  • Maintains appropriate standards of behavior, mutual respect and safety.
  • Promotes equitable opportunities for student learning.
  • Makes learning goals clear to student.
  • Uses appropriate instructional techniques.
  • Evaluates, tries innovative approaches, and refines instructional strategies, including effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence to learn.
  • Communicates learning goals and high standards and expectations for student achievement.
  • Promotes confidence and perseverance in the student that stimulate increased personal student responsibility for achieving the goals of the curriculum.
  • Demonstrates appreciation for and sensitivity to the diversity among individuals.
  • Promotes family and community engagement.
  • Shares responsibility for accomplishing the goals and priorities of his/her/grade/team/ department, building and school district.
  • Demonstrates strong habits of a reflective and continuous learner.
  • Demonstrates continuing concern for professionalism.

    Job Requirements

    • Mass DESE Certification in History (9-12) or Social Studies (9-12)
    • Previous experience and/or knowledge of Inclusive Practices (i.e., PBIS, SEL, UDL)

    • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
