Position: Social Worker - Middle School
Location: Parker Middle School
Reports to: School Principal and Coordinator of Social Emotional Learning & Counseling Services

Job Description:

The Social Worker will assist students in grades 5-8 with personal, social, emotional, psychological and environmental issues that affect their school performance, behavior and socialization. Supervised by the Principal, Assistant Principal, Coordinator of Social Emotional Learning and Counseling and/or the Director of Student Support Services, the Social Worker will partner with the school counselors to assess student needs and deliver programs and services to support students and maximize their ability to access the curriculum. The Social Worker will work closely with administrators, teachers, parents/guardians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, special educators, community-based resources and others. Through individual counseling, groups, strategic classroom lessons and parent workshops, social workers also address issues relevant to the general school population including, but not limited to:

• Support the social, emotional and psychological well-being of students in order to reduce barriers to learning
• Service all students, including those on IEPs and 504s
• Observe, assess and provide services to students in a variety of settings (school, home, and community)
• Provide family support including parent support groups, home visits, parent trainings and educational workshops on adolescent
development, stress reduction and parenting strategies
• Build and maintain relationships with parents/families of students served, including phone calls, meetings, e-mail and when
needed, home visits.
• Communicate and collaborate with the Supervisor of Students and School Resource Officer
• Provide Crisis Intervention Services
• Provide referrals for outside services (counseling, support groups, etc.)
• Participate in SPED assessments as necessary and appropriate
• Work directly with students as part of a multidisciplinary team
• Meet regularly with the Principal, Assistant Principal, Guidance Counselors, Psychologists and Nurses in order to coordinate
student services
• Work closely with therapists, BCBAs and other direct service providers to support students and communicate with their teaching
team about their educational needs
• Assess adolescent mental health needs and implement short term, frequent and strategic interventions
• Facilitate groups for identified at-risk students to develop coping, social and decision-making skills
• Develop and provide professional learning opportunities to staff related to social emotional issues and how they impact learning
• Support school and districtwide social emotional learning initiatives, including curriculum in the areas of resiliency and student
mental health
• Assist with screenings including (but not limited to): SBIRT, YRBS, RCADS

    Job Requirements

    • Qualifications:

      Master’s Degree or higher in the field of Education, Psychology, School Counseling, Social Work or a related field

      MA DESE License as a School Social Worker/School Adjustment Counselor (All Levels)

      Knowledge of and experience working in a school setting (middle school preferred)

      Excellent communication (oral and written) skills, including the effective utilization of technology and information management
      tools

      Ability to work independently and as part of a team

      Experience working in diverse communities preferred


      Reports to: School Principal and Coordinator of Social Emotional Learning & Counseling Services

      Salary: Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications

      Work Year: This is a full-time, salaried position

      Effective Date of Employment:: August 26, 2019
