Job Description

Evaluations and Counseling
  • evaluates students in relation to learning needs
  • conducts diagnostic studies to identify child’s needs, limitations and potentials, observing children in classroom and at play, studying school records, consulting with parents and school personnel, administering and interpreting diagnostic findings
  • develops hypotheses, aggregates and interprets data and makes recommendations assists students, parents and staff in the development of realistic academic and personal expectations
  • recommends curriculum alternatives and specific instructional strategies to staff and parents
  • recommends behavior management techniques to staff and parents
  • counsels students and consults with parents and staff in the development of appropriate behavior goals
  • provides individual and/or group counseling to specified students to achieve personal, social and emotional adjustment
  • serves as liaison for school referrals to community resources; maintains contact with outside community agencies; appropriately utilizes outside agencies based upon identified needs of students
  • refers individuals to community agencies to secure medical, vocational, or social services for child or family
Team Meetings
  • Chairs team meetings: eligibility determination: initial, re-evaluation meetings and annual reviews.
  • Coordinates the scheduling of all annual reviews and reevaluations w/technology and clerical support
IEP Process and Monitoring
  • Reviews all IEP reports prior to meeting
  • Sets due dates for receipt of written evaluation reports
  • Summarizes key results
  • Insures FAPE (free and appropriate education)
  • Insures that the Team identifies and provides educationally relevant and required services
  • Responsible for content/service delivery/placement of final IEP incorporating input from team meeting
  • Finalizes IEP’s per district protocols
  • Reviews progress reports
  • Oversees adherence to entrance/exit criteria for programs, and services
  • Monitors all students monthly who have Services Only IEPs in private tuition schools, and OOD placements
  • Provides monthly report to director the numbers of students referred, and on IEP’s at the building level
District Procedures
  • Follows District Special Education procedures and protocols, including IEP process, placement, and counseling protocols
  • Reviews building based referrals for completeness of SST process including documentation for concerns, strategy implementation and results prior to generating consent for evaluation
  • Generates consent for evaluations with consultation from psychologists or other evaluators
  • Attends and participates in district-wide special education department activities
  • Attends and participates in district-wide professional development activities as directed by Principal and/or Special Education Director
Building Based Responsibilities
  • Attends weekly SST meetings, as requested
  • Conducts monthly building based special education department meetings. Aligns central office initiatives, concerns, and procedures
  • Attends monthly Team Chair meetings
  • Consults with building based substantially separate programs
  • Consults with Principal, Psychologist, and special Education Teachers/Therapists for all special education procedures/protocols and building issues
  • Participate and facilitate the transition of students with disabilities from one grade/level to the next
  • Assists the staff in utilization of recommended strategies
  • Plans, implements and evaluates staff development activities in the area of behavior management, testing, guidance and teaching strategies
  • Participates in the development of school district programs
  • Assures that central office initiatives, concerns, and procedures are communicated regularly at staff meetings
  • Maintain an informed, professional, ongoing interaction between the TEAM members, Principals, general education school staff, and parents of students with disabilities
