Job Posting: Middle School Special Education Teacher (SY19-20)

Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School (APR) is a free, public school offering a rigorous college preparatory program to 525 students in 5th through 12th grade. This position will perform a variety of responsibilities, including (but not limited to):

Essential Functions and Responsibilitie


  • Assessment and Interpretation
    • Develop Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) annually to reflect students’ progress and goals
    • Write tri-annual progress reports for students with IEPs
    • Attend all initial, reevaluation, and annual review meetings for students on caseload
    • Conduct educational assessments (i.e. WIAT IV, Key Math, TOWL, TORC)
    • Prepare and present all educational evaluations for initial and reevaluation meetings
    • Collaborate with other evaluators to ensure that all assessments are completed to gain full insight into the student’s needs
    • Skillfully interpret assessment findings and relate them to educational performance and needs
    • Make recommendations regarding accommodations, modifications, services and/or other supports to address those needs
    • Present key, relevant assessment findings to students and families in a clear, concise, non-technical, respectful manner, and engage them in a constructive conversation to promote student learning
    • Develop 504 Accommodation Plans and other intervention plans

    Direct Services
    • Teach small group academic support classes daily
    • Co-plan and co-teach with general educators in Math, English, History and Science in order to provide specialized instruction within the general education classroom
    • Implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, and track their progress
    • Modify general education curriculum to meet the needs of students on caseload
    • Provide test accommodations to students
    • Assist in the implementation of Tier 2 and 3 PBIS interventions for struggling students to support the teaching process and to maximize learning
    • Prepare and help students transition from grade to grade

    Partnering with Students and Families
    • Mentoring 8-15 students, through regular advisory meetings
    • Communicating weekly with students, families, and leadership around academic and behavioral issues
    • Attending occasional after-school events

    Qualifications
    • A Bachelor’s degree is required; a Master’s degree is preferred;
    • A valid MA teaching license in special education;
    • A minimum of two years teaching experience in a charter or district school setting serving a similar demographic preferred, but not required;
