Job Description

The Academy/Career Specialist provides leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive career education program that promotes knowledge of careers within the Academies of STEM, Arts and Culture, Business and Entrepreneurship, Medical Tech, Health and Sports Medicine and Teacher Education. Under the direction of the Site Leader or his/her designee, the Academy/Career Specialist is committed to Atlantis Charter School Board of Trustee’s policies regarding equity, human rights and cross cultural understanding.

TITLE: Academy/Career Specialist

QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in related field required. Master’s degree preferred. Years of related experience may be substituted for education requirement.
2-3 years previous experience working as a career counselor or guidance counselor with high school students preferred
Knowledge of career and technical education programs required
Knowledge of community resources, employment opportunities and other related programs required
Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse student population and maintain effective working relationships with school staff, parents and community partners
Ability to multi-task, organize workflow, work well in high pressure environment and meet deadlines
Ability to work collaboratively to foster the success of others
Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office software
Ability to relate well to others and ability to motivate students.
Ability to work effectively with others.

REPORTS TO: Site Leader(s)


SUPERVISION: None

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
While actual roles and responsibilities will vary depending on individual circumstances, the Career/Academy Specialist will generally be required to perform some or all of the following tasks. Note that this list is not all-inclusive and that the administrator may also assign other tasks he/she deems appropriate.

1. Under the direction of the Site Leaders, provides leadership in the development and implementation of a comprehensive career education program infused into the curriculum.
2. Supports the guidance counselor in providing career education services for a diverse student population in grades 7-12 that emphasize development of long-range educational and career plans.
3. Helps students explore their interests and abilities through a wide range of career awareness and assessment activities.
4. Assists students in researching careers they are interested in and in discovering what careers would match their skills and personalities.
5. Works with counselor and parents to help students establish a career plan(s) with goals and objectives.
6. Works with counselor to assist students in selecting appropriate academic, career and technical education programs to help students reach their career goals.
7. Helps students find information on post-secondary education and training opportunities.
8. Encourages students to explore non-traditional employment and training opportunities.
9. Provides guidance to teachers and students in the development of student portfolios and other documents needed by students to secure and maintain employment.
10. Based on assessments of student interest, researches possible partnership and collaborations that will support the Academies.
11. Establishes partnerships with local area businesses that will support real world experiences for the career interests of students in the established Academies.
12. Schedules on-site and/or off-site opportunities for students to learn and explore different careers.
13. Works cooperatively with business partners, teachers counselor and site leaders in the planning and delivery of programs, projects and/or activities that focus on helping students to acquire appropriate workplace readiness skills, attitudes, and behaviors needed for successful employment and continuing education.
14. Attends appropriate system-wide career and technical education meetings, support staff meetings and counselor meetings.

EVALUATION
An annual performance evaluation of the Academy/Career Specialist will be conducted by the Site Leaders or his/her designee.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Follows 10 month schedule. Salary as negotiated per contract.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
Ability to walk, sit and stand for long periods. Regularly uses computer keyboard, requiring eye-hand coordination and finger dexterity. Occasional travel between school buildings.
