POSITION TITLE:             School Nurse

 

FLSA:                                Exempt

 

Reports to:                       Director of School Health Services and the Building Principal 

 

Terms of Employment:    184 day work year.  Benefits and salary in accordance with the LEA Unit A collective bargaining agreement.

 

Unit A 19-20 Salary Range

 

 QUALIFICATION:

  • Current valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts
  • Baccalaureate degree in nursing from an accredited college or university
  • Experience with children having disabilities, preferred
  • Current CPR/AED certification

 

JOB GOAL:

  • To provide professional health services to students, parents, and staff by coordinating the resources of the school, home community, thus promoting an increased awareness of health and healthy

 

DUTIES:

  • Duties include developing, implementing and managing a school health program for a school
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with all applicable FERPA and HIPAA regulations and requirements for records, documents, health and other information relating to students.
  • Willing to adjust to the changing needs of the department, with the flexibility to meet those work needs and demands
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others to achieve common district goals
  • Possess a high-level of interpersonal skills, general pleasant demeanor and respectful attitude towards employees at all levels of the school

 

 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assess student health and make recommendations for health care; initiate and manage individual health care plans
  • Manage and supervise all health office communications
  • Report to the Head Nurse any health issues that occur in their programs
  • Maintain accurate medication records
  • Obtain doctors’ orders and parental consents for student medication in school and coordinate such dispensing of medication
  • Consult with family physicians as required and appropriate with parental authorization
  • Maintain up-to-date school health records, correspondence and reports
  • Maintain effective and timely communication with appropriate classroom and office staff with regard to medical issues
  • Inform classroom staff of their duties with respect to health issues in their classrooms (i.e. IEP dates, excessive absenteeism, seizures and upcoming field trips).
  • Write and annually update Individual Health Care Plans (IHCPs) for all students with medical issues, obtaining parent signatures on all IHCPs before implementing them, and distributing IHCPs as designated by the Administration
  • Provides training to unlicensed school personnel for the administration of prescription medications per Massachusetts Department of Public Health
  • Train necessary staff in and monitor the administration of medically related procedures
  • Provide Medicaid reimbursement documentation
  • Provide and supervise medically prescribed interventions including medication, First Aid, CPR, and triage in accordance with IHCPs, prescriptions, standard nursing practice, state and federal laws and
  • Review all students’ IHCPs and Individual Medical Protocols with appropriate classroom teachers and
  • Maintain health care log and summarizes as needed in data collection
  • Perform other duties as determined by Superintendent of Schools or designees
