About Veritas Prep and the Holyoke Public Schools

Friends of Veritas and the Holyoke Public Schools are excited to come together to launch Veritas Prep Holyoke as a part of the district’s innovative turnaround effort. This partnership is founded on the belief that all students, regardless of race, class, or socioeconomic circumstance, are entitled to a high quality education defined by high expectations.  The mission of Veritas Prep is to prepare students in grades 5-8 to compete, achieve, and succeed in high school, college, and beyond. Veritas Prep provides a rigorous college preparatory curriculum and character education within a safe and positive learning environment. We utilize an extended school day and year and data-driven instruction to drive dramatic gains in student achievement.  The school will begin in year one with fifth graders only and will grow to serve students in grades five through eight.

Role:

Veritas Prep Holyoke is seeking an experienced art or music teacher who is a creative self-starter with a passion to cultivate a love of visual arts or music within our middle school scholars. In this role, you will develop an art or music curriculum across grades 5 through 8, engaging with all scholars across our school. You will work as a part of our growing enrichment team of teachers, including a physical education teacher in the first year and other enrichment teachers in subsequent years. You will work with them and other teachers in the school to build a classroom culture of high expectations, consistent with our school-wide model. 

 

 

Specific Responsibilities:

 

Building a Culture of Learning

  • Design an art or music program and curriculum for grades 5-6 in year one and in grades 5-8 in subsequent years
  • Plan and deliver high quality art instruction daily to students across grades 5-6
  • Implement school-wide procedures and routines consistently to build a culture of high expectations both academically and behaviorally
  • Integrate the teaching of social emotional program and skills into both formal and informal teaching moments with students
  • Evaluate each scholar's growth and give feedback

Team Planning and Professional Growth

  • Participate actively in weekly professional development and incorporate lessons learned there into daily teaching practice
  • Participate in weekly or bi-weekly coaching meetings, incorporating feedback into daily teaching and planning practices
  • Actively work with enrichment team and other teachers to communicate proactively with families and to build a inclusive, one team spirit with families
  • Participate actively in weekly planning meetings with fellow enrichment teachers to build a positive culture in your classrooms

Qualifications:

  • Aligned with the educational philosophy and mission of Veritas Prep
  • Brings a vision for a strong art or music program 
  • Possess a Bachelor’s degree in teaching or area of expertise
  • 2 or more years of teaching experience preferred
  • Foreign language ability, particularly in Spanish preferred
  • Strong commitment to do whatever it takes for all our students to be college-ready and a vision of how the arts support students in being college ready
