Job Description

Background on Brooke

Brooke Charter Schools, founded in 2002, are a network of five high-performing public charter schools in Boston. Our three K-7 schools in Roslindale, Mattapan, and East Boston enroll a total of 1,600 students; Brooke's 8th Grade Academy currently serves about 170 students and Brooke High School serves about 140 9th, 10th, and 11th graders. In August of 2018, BHS moved into a new state-of-the-art facility in Mattapan, where enrollment will eventually grow to about 600 students in grades 9-12.

Our mission is to provide an academically rigorous public education to students from the cities of Boston and Chelsea that will ensure that they are prepared to attend and succeed in college. Named after Senator Edward W. Brooke III, the first African-American popularly elected to the U.S. Senate, our strategy is to focus relentlessly on developing excellent teaching. Reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve, 56% of Brooke students self-identify as Black, 34% as Latinx, 6% Caucasian, 2% Asian, and 2% Native American or multiracial. About three-quarters qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Over the last several years, Brooke students have set a new bar for what is possible in urban public education, consistently producing results among the highest in the state.

At Brooke, computer science is a central feature of the curriculum. In grades 1-8, Brooke students study coding and robotics 60 to 90 minutes per week, using a range of introductory languages and platforms, including Code.org, Pencil Code, Scratch, LEGO Mindstorms, and App Inventor. The high school computer science program builds on this foundation, with three years of required computer science for every student, including an AP course.

Role & Responsibilities

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing CS department at a school deeply committed to CS education. The person hired for this position will teach multiple sections of computer science daily. In your application, please indicate your experience and comfort level teaching AP CS A, AP CS Principles, and any other high school CS content. Also, please describe any previous experience with FIRST Robotics, digital electronics, CAD, 3D printing, and/or mechanical fabrication.

Every Brooke High teacher is also responsible for serving as an advisor.  Advisors serve as student mentors, parent communication liaisons, and college counselors for a small single-gender group of students. Advisories meet twice daily; each day begins with a short check-in and ends with a 25-minute advisory session. Additionally, advisories engage in weekly classes designed around college information and character education.

Teachers’ hours are 7:45-4:00 daily, with the student academic day running from 10:30-3:45 on Mondays and 8:00-3:45 on other days. Teachers may elect to lead an after-school extra-curricular club or coach a sport for an additional stipend.  In 2019, teacher PD will begin on July 17th, and the school year will begin on August 20th.

Brooke Charter Schools is a network of three K-8 public, charter schools dedicated to closing the achievement gap in the Greater Boston area. Brooke students are 98% minority and 78% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. For nearly a decade, we have steadily expanded to provide more and more students with the quality education they deserve. The original Brooke School (Brooke Roslindale) serves 475 students in grades K-8. In August 2011, Brooke opened a second school (Brooke Mattapan) in a temporary location in South Boston, serving 168 students in grades K, 1, and 5, with plans to grow to full size (475 students in grades K-8) by 2014. In August 2012, Brooke opened its third K-8 school (Brooke East Boston), which will follow the same growth trajectory. This rate of growth makes Brooke the largest and fastest growing charter school network in Boston. Over the last few years, Brooke scholars have set a new bar for what is possible at an urban public school. For the last three years, Brooke 7th and 8th graders have ranked among the highest performing districts in the state and have been the highest performing district in the state on at least one Math or ELA test.
