Job Description

Background on Brooke
Brooke Charter Schools, founded in 2002, are a network of five high-performing public charter schools in Boston. Brooke currently serves 1,899 students in grades K-11 and will grow to serve 2,200 students in grades K-12 by 2023.

Named after the late Senator Edward W. Brooke, the first African-American popularly elected to the U.S. Senate, our strategy is to focus relentlessly on developing excellent teaching. Reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve in Boston and Chelsea, 56% of Brooke students self-identify as Black, 34% as Latinx, 6% Caucasian, 2% Asian, and 2% Native American or multiracial. About three-quarters of Brooke students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Over the last several years, Brooke students have set a new bar for what is possible in urban public education, consistently outperforming their peers in Boston Public Schools, and producing academic achievement results among the highest in the state.

The Role
Teachers who thrive at Brooke are those committed to developing strong relationships with their students and challenging them daily to be their best selves, academically and personally. They tend to be passionate instructors and hungry learners who crave frequent, high-quality feedback on their practice. At Brooke, teachers are constantly going above and beyond to be the leaders of their classrooms and meet the diverse needs of their students. Brooke is built for teachers who want to think deeply about instruction and collaborate daily with their grade-level peers and instructional leaders.

The ELA/Social Studies Teacher will hold primary responsibility for the development of curriculum, the instruction of content, and the growth and success of one classroom of students.

Teachers’ hours are 7:15-4:20 daily, with the student academic day running from 7:45-4:00 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 7:45-12:30 on Wednesdays.

A successful Brooke Middle School ELA & Social Studies Teacher will ensure that all students feel challenged and known.

  • Provide small group and one-on-one targeted tutoring and support to students for approximately 60 minutes per day.

  • Actively participate in three hours every week of targeted professional development
  • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues

  • Minimum of two years of teaching experience as a classroom teacher (excluding student teaching, practicum, or international teaching experience)
  • Create a classroom climate where students are held to the highest expectations for interpersonal and academic work, and are actively engaged in constructing their understanding of the core content
  • Use frequent data collection and analysis to drive awareness of student needs, provide feedback, and plan instruction
  • Excellent teamwork, communication, and organization skills
  • Relate authentically and professionally with students, parents, and colleagues

  • Welcome to Brooke Charter Schools!

Brooke Charter Schools is a network of three K-8 public, charter schools dedicated to closing the achievement gap in the Greater Boston area. Brooke students are 98% minority and 78% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. For nearly a decade, we have steadily expanded to provide more and more students with the quality education they deserve. The original Brooke School (Brooke Roslindale) serves 475 students in grades K-8. In August 2011, Brooke opened a second school (Brooke Mattapan) in a temporary location in South Boston, serving 168 students in grades K, 1, and 5, with plans to grow to full size (475 students in grades K-8) by 2014. In August 2012, Brooke opened its third K-8 school (Brooke East Boston), which will follow the same growth trajectory. This rate of growth makes Brooke the largest and fastest growing charter school network in Boston. Over the last few years, Brooke scholars have set a new bar for what is possible at an urban public school. For the last three years, Brooke 7th and 8th graders have ranked among the highest performing districts in the state and have been the highest performing district in the state on at least one Math or ELA test.
