Job Description

Intern with a Master Teacher in Acera's Lower Elementary classroom, and learn a wide array of strategies to grow students' skills in literacy, math, project based learning, and social emotional intelligence.

Acera is a K-8 School as well as a STEAM Learning Lab Enrichment Program -- open to the public -- which runs every afternoon and all summer. We hire extraordinary Teacher Entrepreneurs who engage students with an interdisciplinary, hands-on learning approach. This volunteer position has the potential to offer substitute teacher hours and to grow into a part or full time position for the 2019/20 school year.

The ideal candidate would be committed to a student-centered educational approach and wants to expand their experiences post college while they job search for next year, or is a former teacher who is coming back into the workforce -- and wants to get their feet wet (again?) before taking on a full time or nearly full time teaching role next year. Alternatively, the right gap-year student who wants to spend time in a joyous environment for this winter and spring, and ponder whether education is the right path for them could also be a great fit! The key requirements are great attitude, kind heart, calm presence, good innate judgement of people, flexibility, and a desire to learn from a phenomenally talented and kind master teacher.

The Need for Something Different:
Massachusetts ranks at the bottom of the 50 states in supporting the needs of gifted students; there is great urgency and need within the gifted population that currently does not have access to an appropriate education.

Job Description: Acera seeks dynamic, motivated, and dedicated professionals who have a deep love of and respect for children, who wants the freedom to invent exciting and creative learning programming, projects and curricula. The ideal candidate facilitates learning with differentiated instruction strategies, allows for conceptual learning which is years ahead of chronological student age, and meets the fine motor, kinesthetic, sensory and social skill development needs of each student. Most of our students operate 2 or more grade levels ahead of expectation in one or more academic areas and all have qualified for admission as gifted students. The ideal candidate will be creative, articulate, flexible, collaborative, and have exceptional executive functioning skills.

The expectations for this position include a collaborative approach learning from and working with our Lower Elementary Lead teacher. Learn about and apply an eclectic blend of pedagogy, including teaching for understanding, multi age, Montessori, thematic and interdisciplinary, experiential, STEM oriented, and individualized to fit the needs, abilities and interests of each child. Use a teacher as facilitator and teacher as coach style. This is not a traditional “in charge teacher who dispenses the knowledge” approach. Our teachers serve as facilitators who enable student learning in a way customized for student abilities and interests.

The role could include teaching students in literacy and math, being an EQ coach during lunch and recess, diving deeply alongside with the lead classroom teacher within hands-on learning afternoon timeslots, and adding value as support for our lower elementary students. Substitute teaching may supplant other roles when other teachers are out. Depending upon schedule and interest, paid after school enrichment work may become available, and our summer program will be hiring, as well.
