Temporary School Adjustment Counselor
(2/18/19 thru the end of the 2018-2019 school year)

Job Goal:
To provide mental health treatment services and consultant services to Special Education pupils, school staff and parents of the Somerville Public Schools.

• As a member of an evaluation team, writes measurable goals and objectives for IEP’s and collects data reflective of progress to address social or emotional issue that are affecting a student’s ability to access the general curriculum.
• Implements individual and small group counseling, whole classroom interventions, social skills training, and consultation with teachers, administrators and parents.
• Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments aligned with highest standards to aid in the development of Positive Behavior Intervention Plans for students who experience difficulty meeting the social and behavioral expectations of the school.
• Provides teachers, staff, families, and outside agencies consultations as needed and aligned with the IEP.
• Services as a referral agent to obtain necessary aid from specialized public or private organizations
• Collects, analyzes and presents pupil data and written reports as requested.
• Conducts comprehensive home assessments for Special Education evaluations
• Attends staff meetings, wrap around meetings, and IEP meetings as requested.
• Supervises mental health-counseling interns as needed.
• Works to create a school climate of caring and mutual respect for all individuals.
• Works as a member of the school team that is available for crisis intervention to diffuse behavior problems.
• Provide Professional Development as needed regarding but not limited to Autism Spectrum Disorder, school refusal, attention deficit disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, or reactive attachment disorder.
• Extensive experience in working with students on the Autism Spectrum
• Strong interpersonal skills
• Ability to work collaboratively as a team
• A master’s degree in social work or counseling psychology
• Adjustment Counselor Certification
• Licensed social Worker desirable
• Demonstrated competence in establishing strong interpersonal relationship with children and adults.
• Knowledge of available human services in related areas
• Two year’s minimum experience in counseling school aged children in a school setting, mental health clinic or appropriate human services agency, preferred
• Knowledge of Special Education laws and regulations

Position Reports to: The Principal of Somerville High School and Director of Special Education
