Job Description

Position: Group Leader - Elementary After School Program
Location: Melrose Public Elementary Schools
Supervisor:: Program Site Coordinators and Director
Status: Part-time hourly, 18 hours week or less, $15.75/hr., non-union, non-benefit eligible Position runs through the Academic Year (approximately mid August - June).

Summary Melrose Education Stations provide balanced enrichment programming at the end of the school day in students' own elementary schools. Professional staff members engage students in a creative, motivating and cooperative atmosphere to further inquiry and development. Education Stations also offers enrichment activities during other non-school times including professional development days, some vacation/holidays.

Responsibilities:
  1. Manage and record the daily attendance of students grades K-5 accounting for assigned group during program activities and maintaining accurate head count.
  2. Manage and respond to student and group behavior during enrichment activities.
  3. Lead students through scheduled activities and transitions.
  4. Assist program teachers/site coordinators during group activities by monitoring student participation, distributing supplies, and other tasks as assigned.
  5. Lead group activities such as arts & crafts, gym games, and/or small circle activities following Education Stations teaching method.
  6. Incorporate a positive behavior support system into daily interactions with children using verbal/non verbal praise, while providing clear and consistent expectations for children's behavior.
  7. Participate and interact with students throughout enrichment activities including gym games, crafts, and homework..
  8. Ensure the safety of the youth during activities and respond to needs.
  9. Complete and turn in forms as required or directed by Site Coordinator/Assistant Site Coordinator.
  10. Promote a fun and inclusive atmosphere for students staying after school.
  11. May support individuals with special needs or provide support for individual children.
  12. Supervise and delegate tasks to high school age students employed as "mentors".
  13. Help with set up, daily cleaning of program spaces, dismantling, and storage of program supplies and equipment.
Qualifications:
  1. High School graduate and a minimum of 18 years of age.
  2. Demonstrated experience with elementary age students is preferred (as a volunteer or in the workplace) but not required.
  3. Interest in or pursuit of a degree in education, special education, program management, or related field preferred but not required.
  4. Able to remain calm in an energetic, noisy environment.
  5. Punctual, reliable and regular attendance is required.
  6. Ability to communicate effectively, multitask and prioritize while working as part of a larger team.
  7. Ability to pass a Background Check including Fingerprinting and a CORI/SORI records exam with no record of conviction or plea of no contender for any crime involving a minor and no record of arrest or conviction for any crime involving sexual misconduct or moral turpitude.
  8. Must be in compliance with the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace policy.

The employee is required to hear, feel and talk and speak English. The employee must have close, distance, and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Employment is in a school environment and activities occur inside and out. Group leaders need to be able to carry up to 20 lbs. and may be subject to a sufficient level of noise when groups of 40 or more children are gathered for activities.
