Position: Assistant Principal
Reports to: High School Principal


The assistant principal is responsible for coordinating support services and supervising student behavior for roughly one third of the student body. As a member of the administrative team, the assistant principal assists in developing and monitoring the implementation of all school policies. The assistant principal works with students, parents and faculty in developing programs and policies that are both preventative, rehabilitative and restorative.

The assistant principal coordinates the administrative management of high school organization and the dissemination of information about related activities. In this role, s/he supervises attendance, prepares reports, works with the guidance director to administer the MCAS, oversees fire drills and leads the schedule committee to create the master schedule.

The assistant principal reports directly to the high school principal, and in the absence of the principal acts as her /his agent. Reporting to the assistant principal are the department heads, the athletic director and their staffs as their duties affect record keeping, student discipline and the daily operation of the plant.

As chair of the student support team for one full house, the assistant principal works very closely with special services and guidance staff. S/he also serves on the crisis team.

The assistant principal, under the direction of the principal and in conjunction with program administrators, will supervise the professional staff to ensure the highest quality of instruction.

The assistant principal reviews student records as pertains to attendance, discipline and graduation requirements and works with students, parents, counselors, and program leaders to ensure compliance with all requirements.

The assistant principal shares responsibility for the daily operation of the plant which concerns such items as bells, traffic in corridors, and decorum throughout the building.

The assistant principal prepares and supervises the production of the Program of Studies, compiles grading statistics, and develops reports for the principal to allow for planning staff needs and space utilization.


Responsible for discipline and attendance for roughly one third of the student body.

Provide academic and adjustment counseling to students and parents in conjunction with appropriate school personnel. When needed, make referrals to outside agencies and serve as liaison to these agencies (Human Relations Services, Riverside, etc.)

Supervise and evaluate teachers in conjunction with other administrators who have responsibilities in these matters.

Check student graduation requirements. Advise students and parents when students are in danger of not graduating.

Act as the agent of the high school principal in his/her absence.

Organize and create the master schedule of the school.

Supervise the production of the Program of Studies. Prepare summary of proposed changes.

Assign teacher supervisory duties.

Co-supervise the administration of MCAS testing in coordination with the Director of Guidance.

Be proficient with the operation of the student information system (PowerSchool) and serve as a faculty resource.

Oversee the coordination of student field trips; arrange transportation for these trips; post and maintain monthly school-wide calendar of all field trips.

Organize and supervise activities related to the evaluation of Wellesley High School.

Serve on 9-12 and K-12 committees as necessary.

Supervise, plan work schedule, and evaluate secretary to the assistant principal and student supervisors.
