School Summary:
TEC Connections Academy Commonwealth Virtual School (TECCA) is a tuition-free virtual public school district that employs over 70 faculty and staff, serving our diverse population of 1,700 students in Grades K–12 representing over 350 cities and towns across Massachusetts. Sponsored by Massachusetts’ leading collaborative, The Education Cooperative (TEC), TECCA opened for the 2014–15 school year with approval by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. In February, 2017, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education approved a five-year renewal of TECCA’s Certificate.

Position and Responsibilities:
Working part-time (half the week) from the office in East Walpole, Massachusetts, the Grade 6-12 ELA Department Head will provide leadership and oversight to the ELA Department (its content and instructional program and delivery systems) which serves a student population that is projected to reach 2,300 students during the 2018-2019 school year.

In our efforts to engage all students and families in our virtual (yet still human) environment, the ELA Department Head will:
• Provide oversight and alignment of the ELA curriculum in Grades 6 through 12;
• Analyze student achievement data from all sources and make appropriate recommendations;
• Manage, supervise and evaluate all staff members within the Science Department;
• Plan meaningful meetings, focused on student achievement;
• Identify and support the Professional Development and Training Program for all teachers in theELA Department;
• Develop a strong knowledge of TECCA’s curriculum, and a very detailed knowledge of the courses for which responsible;
• Actively contribute to the Leadership Team with a solutions-oriented approach and where positive intent is assumed;
• Communicate with learning coaches, students, and parents through use of the telephone, interactive presentation software, and other curriculum tools to support engagement, intervention plans, progressive discipline models, and/or administrative interventions;
• Support the Enrollment Process for students in Grades 6-12 (in cooperation with Administration) including the outreach to potential families to determine eligibility and placement, and appropriate onboarding supports;
• Supports students (and faculty) through the RtI (Response to Intervention) Process, as needed
• Review curriculum and devise alternate approaches to presenting lessons to increase student understanding (working directly with students and parents);
• Support students and parents with alternate strategies and provide additional assistance with daily assignments and projects; and
• Consult with other teachers and staff learning specialists to develop alternate enrichment activities and modifications to students’ programs to increase student understanding.

NOTE:
• Salary: $68,000 - $75,000, commensurate with experience
• This is a 12-month, administrative position
• All employees participate in the organization of a comprehensive (MCAS) State Testing Implementation Plan which may require the employee to travel to a particular location and/or stay overnight for a multi-day assignment. (Employee is reimbursed for expenses)
• All employees contribute to the Marketing Plan by co-hosting a maximum of two informational sessions per school year. Sessions can be either virtual or in-person at the employee’s choosing based on availability

    • Requirements:
      • Current/Pending DESE License for Department Head/School Administrator 6-12 or appropriate/related administrative license
      • Current License in relevant grade level and content/subject matter
      • Provide/obtain Massachusetts RETELL/SEI (Rethinking Equity in the Teaching of Math Language Learners) endorsement within one (1) year of employment
      • Strong technology skills (especially with Microsoft ® OS and Microsoft ® Office programs)
      • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
      • Student-focused approach
      • High degree of flexibility
      • Demonstrated ability to work well in fast paced environment
      • Team player track record
      • Willingness/ability to travel on occasion for student outreach and state testing events (may require occasional overnight travel)
