Job Description

Moderate Disabilities Teacher: 7.5 hours per day, 5 days a week (182 days)
Locations: Billerica, MA
Reporting to: High School Principal
2018-2019 School Year

Valley Collaborative is a Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education approved public school entity. We provide high quality academic, therapeutic and vocational services to individuals referred by local school districts and social service agencies. We also provide ongoing professional development and training experiences for educators and educational agencies. Recognizing that the educational environment rapidly changes, Valley Collaborative creates, adapts, and provides flexible programming to address evolving needs. We provide an environment within which students and others can maximize educational and/or occupational skills. By sharing its resources with multiple school districts and social service agencies, its programs maintain superior quality and reasonable costs to those it serves, by meeting or exceeding state standards, and achieving economies of scale.

Moderate Teacher Requirements:

• Experience working with students diagnosed with mental health disorders included but not limited to Mood Disorder, PTSD, RAD, Anxiety, ADHD;
• Experience working with students specific learning disabilities and behavioral needs;
• Experience and training in de-escalation/physical intervention strategies;
• Consult with school staff regarding mental health symptoms and the impact on academic functioning;
• Work as part of an inter-disciplinary school team to ensure clinical needs of students are met;
• Work with SLP, OT, PT, and BCBA to develop and implement IEPs;
• Implement behavior support plans as developed in conjunction with the BCBA as well as monitor teacher aides conducting such plans;
• Hospital-based or mental health setting experience highly desirable;
• Maintain an organized, safe and productive classroom in order for students to make adequate progress;
• Ability to teach High School level Science;
• Consistent contact with families;
• Trauma informed care training essential;
• Supervising classroom and behavioral aides;
• Experience in Crisis Response and Physical Management skills essential;
• Develop IEP goals and progress reports that are reflective of student’s mental health needs;
• Have strong written and verbal communication skills;
• Demonstrate ability to approach individuals in a creative and thoughtful manner;
• Flexibility to meet identified student needs;
• A strong commitment to the goals, mission, and philosophy of the organization;
• Model respect, honesty, consideration, responsibility, and positive attitude with both peers and students;
• Participate in staff meetings and in-service training as requested;
• Provide transportation for students in Collaborative vehicles, when necessary;
• DESE certification in Moderate Disabilities or High School level Science;
• All other duties as assigned


Qualifications:
• At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred
• Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred
• DESE certification

Physical Demands:

• Constant standing or walking.
• Requires ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
• Bends, reaches, lifts, carries, twists, pushes, pulls, and handles equipment when performing duties.
• Repetitive wrist/arm movements when on vocational site.
• Manual and finger dexterity and motor coordination are necessary when on vocational site.
• Able to reach and operate equipment and systems safely and effectively.

Other Competencies (skills, abilities, behavior):
Ability to understand and follow both written and oral instructions. Adaptability to perform routine, repetitive tasks within a specific period of time. Prioritizes work assignments to be completed within time requirements.

Must demonstrate a positive and caring attitude toward students, clients, and staff. Must remain flexible and adaptable in order to meet department needs.
