Job Description

Esperanza Academy seeks a creative, highly motivated lead reading teacher who can engage and inspire students with a wide range of learning needs. The candidate should have a clear understanding of the scope and sequence of the content area, and have a personal love for real-world, hands-on, problem-solving based instruction to invoke critical thinking skills in students, creating a relevant, yet rigorous standard in the classroom.

ABOUT ESPERANZA ACADEMY: Esperanza Academy is an independent, tuition-free middle school (grade 5-8) in the Episcopal tradition where 60 underserved girls from Lawrence, Massachusetts are welcomed into an empowering learning community. Founded in 2006, Esperanza offers its students a transformative education that integrates a rigorous academic curriculum using 1:1 technology devices with co-curricular programs in athletics, the arts, clubs, community service, cultural enrichment, social skills, spirituality, and outdoor education. Our students attend extended school days and an extended school year , in classrooms averaging 15 students, using a co-teaching model in most subjects. This holistic educational approach has accrued a remarkable track record: Our graduates attend 23 different secondary schools—more than two thirds of each graduating class has earned full scholarships to independent day and boarding schools— and boast a 100% high-school graduation rate. Eighty percent (80%) of eligible Esperanza graduates are also enrolled in college. Esperanza Academy is 100% privately funded. We are accredited by the Association of Independent Schools of New England and members of the NativityMiguel Coalition..
OUR STUDENTS: Esperanza Academy serves 62 middle school girls, who are 95% Latina and 91% have learned English as a second language. One hundred percent (100%) of incoming students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Students gain admission through a lottery. While Esperanza is a school rooted in the Episcopal tradition, nearly all of our students come from other religious traditions. Families support the school through nominal enrollment fees and by adult volunteerism in the school.

RESPONSIBILITIES: Reporting to the Principal, the Lead Read Teacher will
Implement a skills-based, differentiated reading class, including the components of fluency, phonics and word work, guided reading, writing, independent reading, and grammar.
Collaborate with co-teachers, teaching fellows, administrators and supportive adult family members for student learning.
Collaborate with co-teachers, teaching fellows, and administrators for professional growth and development, and teacher evaluations.
Serve as an Academic Advisor to a group of students.
Perform assigned duties such as: morning and visitor welcome, dismissal, monitor meals, student chores and hallways, assist in planning and coordinating chapel services, attend evening and weekend events as necessary such as open house, parent conferences, student speaker occasions, and fundraisers. Undertake other support and leadership duties as assigned by the Principal or Head of School. At all times and places serve as a positive ambassador of Esperanza Academy in the wider community
Participate in the school’s schedule of overnight retreats and stay away camp (summer, fall, spring)
Support Esperanza’s mission to inspire its students to become active learners and responsible global citizens. Empower and prepare our girls to meet challenges with our core values of wisdom, integrity, leadership and service

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
3+ years reading teaching experience, preferably with students in an urban setting and/or middle school age.
A bachelor’s degree in education or relevant field (coursework in literacy preferred)
Graduate degree in literacy and/or secondary English preferred.
Experience using data to guide instruction
Experience with differentiation (particularly guided reading or similar) and working with students below grade-level in reading
A sense of humor and flexibility
Openness to the role that spirituality plays in education
Positive evaluations from current and former supervisors
