Job Description

Background on Brooke

Brooke Charter Schools opened Brooke High in August of 2016, and we are looking for exceptional educators to add to our founding team, who can help build a strong school culture focused on rigorous academics and developing strength of character.

Brooke Charter Schools, founded in 2002, are a network of four high-performing public charter schools in Boston. Our three K-8 schools in Roslindale, Mattapan, and East Boston enroll a total of 1,500 students; BHS currently serves about 140 9th and 10th graders at a temporary campus in Dorchester. Starting next year, Brooke High School will move into a new permanent facility in Mattapan, where enrollment will eventually grow to about 600 students in grades 9-12. Our mission is to provide an academically rigorous public education to students from the cities of Boston and Chelsea that will ensure that they are prepared to attend and succeed in college. Named after Senator Edward W. Brooke III, the first African-American popularly elected to the U.S. Senate, our strategy is to focus relentlessly on developing excellent teaching. Reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve, 56% of Brooke students self-identify as Black, 34% as Latino, 6% Caucasian, 2% Asian, and 2% Native American or multiracial. About three-quarters qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Over the last several years, Brooke students have set a new bar for what is possible in urban public education, consistently producing results among the highest in the state.

The Associate Teacher Role

Our Associate Teaching Corps is building a team of urban educators committed to closing the achievement gap. After a competitive application process, our Associate Teachers are placed on grade-level teams for a year-long, paid apprenticeship in great teaching.

This is an ideal position for individuals who have limited experience leading their own class, but who are looking for a rigorous and supported teaching position that provides opportunities to work intensely with students. Our goal is to provide sufficient experience, professional development, and mentorship to prepare our Associate Teachers to become lead teachers.

After a selective hiring process, Associate Teachers:

-are placed on grade-level teams for a year-long apprenticeship in great teaching
-participate in targeted professional development and co-planning sessions
-provide one-on-one tutoring; serve as scholar advisors; help with lesson planning and curriculum preparation; and ultimately lead their own classes and lessons

After a year of close mentorship, the majority of our Associate Teachers are ready to take on their own classroom as a full-time teacher.

  • Welcome to Brooke Charter Schools!

Brooke Charter Schools is a network of three K-8 public, charter schools dedicated to closing the achievement gap in the Greater Boston area. Brooke students are 98% minority and 78% qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. For nearly a decade, we have steadily expanded to provide more and more students with the quality education they deserve. The original Brooke School (Brooke Roslindale) serves 475 students in grades K-8. In August 2011, Brooke opened a second school (Brooke Mattapan) in a temporary location in South Boston, serving 168 students in grades K, 1, and 5, with plans to grow to full size (475 students in grades K-8) by 2014. In August 2012, Brooke opened its third K-8 school (Brooke East Boston), which will follow the same growth trajectory. This rate of growth makes Brooke the largest and fastest growing charter school network in Boston. Over the last few years, Brooke scholars have set a new bar for what is possible at an urban public school.
