Stipend Opportunity:  English Learner (EL) Mock K2 Classroom Teacher

 

*** This is a stipended position open for current BPS employees only. ***

The Office of English Learners (OEL) is seeking exceptional Kindergarten/Early Childhood teachers who are highly qualified and knowledgeable to join us in presenting in a series of events for incoming Kindergarten (K2) students who are identified as English Learners. These events or workshops will be held at the Boston Children’s Museum in various major languages to ensure the participation of the families of children who do not have English as their first language. OEL is seeking teachers who speak Arabic, Cape Verdean Creole, Chinese, Haitian Creole, Portuguese, Spanish, Somali and/or Vietnamese, as well as teachers with experience in a multilingual classroom setting to lead these workshops. This is an exciting opportunity for teachers who desire to serve where their efforts matter.

Reports to: Director of EL Community Outreach or a designee on the OEL Family Resource Specialist team.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  • Prepare and lead a 1-hour interactive session for incoming K2 students with their family members present in order to acclimate them to the learning experience of K2 students in an early childhood classroom.  Specifically, the instructor will:
    • Provide sample coursework and demonstrate the rigorous content that a Kindergarten student will receive during Language/Literacy Development instruction that engages students,
    • Demonstrate samples of cognitively demanding tasks and ambitious learning goals set for students receiving Language/Literacy Development instruction, and
    • Share positive practices and strategies that can be used in the home to reinforce student learning.
  • Be present for the entirety of the event (2 hours) that will include interacting with students and families along with answering questions as they arrive and depart the event.
    • Allot time for Questions and Answers (Q&A) for parents who are new to the Boston Public Schools system to ask about expectations and outcomes for their students.
  • Prepare and organize learning materials and resources for instructional time which will be compensated at a $485 stipend per session.
    • Present current classroom work, materials, and curricula that may be used to provide parents up-to-date and an accurate representation of K2 classroom work.
  • Cooperate with OEL Family Resource Specialist staff to plan logistics and identify materials and resources to be used during the 1-hour session.
  • Preview interactive activities with OEL Family Resource Specialists to ensure that all materials are aligned to BPS and OEL goals.
  • Provide to OEL the final agenda and materials before the day of the event.



QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:

 

Qualifications--Required:

 

  • Hold a Bachelor’s degree.
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts Teaching License for Early Childhood.
  • Hold a valid Massachusetts Grade-level appropriate ESL License and/or SEI endorsement.
  • Facilitation experience of adult learning sessions.
  • Meet all state and federal guidelines in order to be fully licensed and Highly Qualified.
  • Current authorization to work in the United States - Candidates must have such authorization by their first day of employment.

 

Qualifications--Preferred:

 

  • Experience teaching in Boston Public Schools
  • Experience teaching ESL in Early Childhood
  • Experience in teaching in an SEI program
  • Excellent knowledge of child development and latest education theories and practices

 

This position is a stipended position and is only open to current employees in BPS whose current job status allows them to participate in these opportunities.
