Role Description:

Teaching Responsibilities

Teaching 4 sections of Spanish, including AP Spanish, with 1-2 separate preparations, depending upon the results of summer school and the final school schedule.

Collaborate with the Spanish department to plan lessons, create/update lesson plans, save all updates and creations to the City on a Hill server.

Implement school wide systems, such as beginning of class routines, merits/demerits, writing across curriculum, as well as any additional academic initiatives implemented at the school or network level.

Maintain accurate and transparent records of student work in the school’s Student Information System

Design and implement high quality assessment of student learning.

Attend all Town Meetings, department day meetings, and weekly faculty meetings.

Attend all grade level and IEP meetings of the students in all sections.

Attend subject and/or grade level field trips as appropriate.

Attend quarterly parent/advisor nights, graduation, and other required school events

Member of an assigned Professional Development Group and participant in City on a Hill’s Peer Observation Program.

Collaborate with SpEd teachers and ESL teachers to ensure appropriate adjustments to curriculum, instruction, and assessment are implemented and attend LN team meetings for all students in sections.

Leading Sustained Silent Reading

Additional duties, as assigned by the Lead Teacher, Vice Principal, or Principal

Curriculum Coordinator

Updates and organizes department folder on CoaH Curriculum for City on a Hill Schools.

Facilitates communication between teacher in the department across schools to complete curriculum and assessment work

Ensures updated and complete scope and sequence documents for each course.

Ensures updated and complete baseline and quarterly interim assessments, answer key and standards spreadsheet, are updated and saved according to protocol for each course according to the calendar deadline.

Supports the analysis of interim data and standard tracking

Creates or facilitates the placement testing in August to ensure consistency across schools

Runs professional development for CoaH Corps in literacy and numeracy.

Works as the liaison between CoaH Corps and their departments.

Supports summer school preparation including curriculum and assessment prep and creation of student rosters decisions

Supports creation of teacher testing schedule to grade assessments and administer proficiencies during the summer and at end of summer school


Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and minimum of 3-5 years of teaching experience

MA teaching certification in Spanish

SEI or RETELL endorsement

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching in an urban setting

Experience teaching AP Spanish

Experience designing curriculum

    • CoaH students are admitted by random lottery in the 9th grade only. For the 2012 lottery held in March, there were 880 applications for approximately 90 seats.
    Who We Serve
    • City on a Hill students come to us from all across the city, but primarily come from the Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston.
    • CoaH students like to be here: this year’s daily attendance rate is 94.3%.
    Some Recent Key Organizational Achievements:
    • In 2011, when comparing growth from 8th grade to 10th grade on the math MCAS exam, CoaH came in fourth of the 339 high schools measured in Massachusetts.
    • CoaH has been re-accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and is currently the only accredited charter high school in Boston.
    • Since the first graduating class of 1998, 100% of City on a Hill graduates have been accepted to college.
