Please note that this position is based out of our Circuit Street location in Roxbury, Massachusetts.

Role Description:

Depending on content area assigned and needs of the student population, the Special Education Teacher will have the a combination several key duties, including an expected .8 FTE co-teaching load (subject to change).

Instructional Duties:

Co-Teaching: Work with the assigned general educator(s) to team-teach an inclusive section. Typically co-teaching is aligned within the same academic subject, but may vary depending on background of candidate and needs of students

Learning Network Support: Run a course focused on helping students achieve mastery of IEP goals, while supporting them in accessing content from their general education courses.

Foundations of Reading/Writing or Math: Run a course focusing on building foundational skills needed for the students to access their corresponding Math and English class. Where possible, these classes are taught by the special education co-teacher that services students in the general education setting.

Fundamentals: Design, implement, and progress monitor a substantially separate content area course. This is targeted towards students learning significantly below grade level, but are typically still working towards passing the high school MCAS.

Case Management:

Manage a caseload of students (typically ranging from 12-18), ideally throughout their time in high school.

With supervision from the appropriate supervisory personnel, develop and monitor implementation of IEPs for all students on caseload, including writing quarterly progress reports.

Act as a resource and support to teachers of students on your caseload to ensure students are making progress.

Department Liaison:

Work with assigned general education department to assist them in designing appropriate instruction for students with disabilities.

Communicate students of concern as well as current topics/assignments to the rest of the Special Education staff.

School-wide responsibilities:

Implement City on a Hill’s Restorative Justice discipline model, as outlined during faculty orientation.

Attend weekly Town Meetings and Faculty Meetings, in addition to professional development as appropriate for position and/or level of experience.

Record attendance daily and update grades at least weekly in Student Information System.

Other duties as assigned by Supervisor and/or Principal.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree and minimum 1 year of related experience

Preliminary MA teaching certification or is working toward earning MA certification.

Background in Mathematics either through college study or previous work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience preferred, particularly in an urban setting

SEI or RETELL endorsement

MA teaching license in Mathematics

    • CoaH students are admitted by random lottery in the 9th grade only. For the 2012 lottery held in March, there were 880 applications for approximately 90 seats.
    Who We Serve
    • City on a Hill students come to us from all across the city, but primarily come from the Dorchester, Hyde Park, Mattapan, and Roxbury neighborhoods of Boston.
    • CoaH students like to be here: this year’s daily attendance rate is 94.3%.
    Some Recent Key Organizational Achievements:
    • In 2011, when comparing growth from 8th grade to 10th grade on the math MCAS exam, CoaH came in fourth of the 339 high schools measured in Massachusetts.
    • CoaH has been re-accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges, and is currently the only accredited charter high school in Boston.
    • Since the first graduating class of 1998, 100% of City on a Hill graduates have been accepted to college.
