The Academy of Notre Dame, Tyngsboro is a private, Catholic school, sponsored by the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur and is based on the educational philosophy of their foundress, St. Julie Billiart. The Academy offers co-educational programming from Pre-K through 8th grade in the Lower School, and a college-preparatory Upper School for young women. Our mission focuses on educating the whole person for life through a curriculum rooted in spiritual formation and academic excellence. The Academy is searching for an Upper School Principal to assume leadership on July 1, 2019. We are seeking a visionary educator whose leadership will ensure excellence in our academic program, and who will promote the mission and values of the school. The Principal will be responsible for ensuring that the Upper School is a challenging and supportive environment that emphasizes scholarship, leadership, citizenship, and service, as well as high standards of character. This position will have broad responsibility for all activities involving the Upper School and be a visible and supportive presence in the classrooms, athletic fields, performances, co-curricular activities, and parent and admission events.

The Principal will collaborate with the Leadership Team on long-term strategic planning and mission delivery. The ideal candidate will be a leader who has exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, a strong commitment to excellence in education, and can lead an outstanding faculty in an inclusive and progressive way. This position reports directly to the President and is a member of the Leadership Team.

    Job Requirements

    • Essential Job Duties:

      • Capacity to inspire commitment to a long-term vision while also juggling the day-to-day logistics and challenges of leading a school.
      • Maintain alignment between the school’s mission and the goals and culture of the Upper School.
      • Provide for the spiritual development of students in consultation with the Campus Ministry Office.
      • Develop/maintain trusting relationships with all constituencies.
      • Promote open communication with the faculty, staff, students and parents.
      • Plan and facilitate Upper School faculty meetings.
      • Review and approve Upper School written communications.
      • In cooperation with the Director of Admission and the Dean of Students, help plan and implement the orientation of Upper School students.
      • Assist the Admissions Office in decisions as needed.
      • Ensure compliance with legal requirements and educational standards.
      • Develop/approve the general academic procedures and programs, including graduation, awards, and honors.
      • Responsible for teacher class loads, co-curricular responsibilities, and teaching schedules.
      • Work collectively with the leadership team as well as department chairs to hire and develop an outstanding faculty and staff.
      • Responsible for the supervision, evaluation and development of the faculty and support staff under Principal’s jurisdiction.
      • Delegate student scheduling and course selection.
      • Develop budgets, with the CFO, for the various curricular areas and co-curricular areas.
      • Sign/approve all academic department requests for spending.
      • Other administrative duties/projects as assigned.

      Requirements:

      • Demonstrate a passion for the Academy of Notre Dame and the education of young women.
      • Ability to convey the school’s program, opportunities and vision to an array of constituencies.
      • Outstanding communications and relational skills in order to connect and communicate effectively and frequently with a diverse school community including faculty, staff, administration, parents, and students.
      • Exhibit a cooperative team approach, complete with a good sense of humor and demonstration of a united front.
      • Knowledge of best practices regarding upper school curricula and pedagogy.
      • Display initiative, internal motivation, and a willingness to take on responsibilities beyond those explicitly defined.
      • Execute responsibilities efficiently, accurately and on or before deadlines.
      • Exhibit sound judgment related to confidential conversations, projects, and information related to the school or any of its constituents including the effective communication regarding such matters to the appropriate individuals.
      • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues while also able to make difficult decisions.
      • Five to seven years of related professional experience at high school level.
      • Perform tasks which are supportive in nature to the essential functions of the job, which may be altered or redesigned as necessary.
      • Ability to periodically work beyond and outside the typical work day in order to meet the needs of the school.
      • Provide proof of U.S. Citizenship or legal resident alien status; evidence of criminal check (CORI) and fingerprinting will be required.

      The Upper School Principal is a full-time exempt position eligible for benefits. The position is based in an office and school environment on a 200-acre campus in Tyngsboro, Massachusetts. The ability to occasionally lift files and storage boxes, walk up and down stairs, attend meetings in varying locations throughout campus, and continually use computers and related office equipment is required. Not all buildings on campus have elevators.
