POSITION TITLE:      Director of Nutrition Services

 

FLSA:                          Exempt

 

SALARY:                     $62,000 - $74,000.00; DOE

    JOB SUMMARY:

     

    The Director of Nutrition Services will plan, direct, monitor and maintain the day-to-day operational and fiscal operation of the Nutrition Services department.  This position will ensure compliance with State, Federal, and local regulations.  The position provides support for Nutrition Services department employees.

  • ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND REQUIREMENTS:

    Essential duties of this position include the following. Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Other related duties may be assigned.

     1.  Possess a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent training in an appropriate discipline from an accredited school) or documented experience in the school nutrition field.

     2.  Minimum of three years school food service experience with one or more years in a supervisory role.

     3.  Demonstrated experience in meal planning and work methods.

     4.  Skilled in managing food service personnel and in directing the efficient and cost effective use of food preparation equipment in multiple settings.

     5.  Knowledgeable of USDA guidelines and state programs and coordinates commodity entitlement.

     6.  Demonstrated ability to work in a collaborative, consensus-building atmosphere.

     7.  Demonstrated experience with a variety of computer software.

     8.  Must work independently on department projects with limited supervision.

     9.  Ability to effectively work and communicate (both orally and in writing) with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds in English, Spanish, or other languages related to the job.

    10.  Maintain integrity of confidential information related to students, staff, or district patrons.

    11.  Ability to work harmoniously with others.

    12.  First aid card and Food Handler's Card required.

    13.  The above is subject to alteration as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.

 

        ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

         Essential responsibilities of this position include the following.  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Other related duties may be assigned.

 

          1.  Oversees, plans, organizes and directs the procurement systems for food, equipment and services for the Nutrition Services Department.  Establishes a pricing structure for meals and food items that follows federal, state , and local guidelines.

     2.  Meet all State and Federal Professional standard requirements for Directors operating School Breakfast and National School lunch programs.

     3.  Develops and implements nutritional sound menus to comply with federal, state, and local regulations.  Monitors compliance at all school sites.

     4.  Develops specifications for food, supplies, and equipment bids and quotations to meet short and long term goals.

     5.  Assist the Director of Finance in preparing budgets tha appropriately reflect financial goals.

     6.  Ensures compliance with procedures for collecting, reconciling, depositing, and disbursing funds.

     7.  Establishes procedures to maintain required daily food production records at each site.

     8.  Responsible for selection, supervision, routine personnel matters, and evaluation of assigned staff.

     9.  Act as a communication link between Nutrition Services staff, district staff, parents, and community providing information regarding established policies and procedures in a professional manner.  Provide impeccable customer service.

    10.  Analyze work methods in a school kitchen setting to achieve maximum efficiency, and effective management of inventory.  Creates procedures for the proper care, preventative maintenance, and repair of equipment.

    11.  Assure resolution of problems or emergencies affecting the availability or quality of Nutrition Services.

    12.  Implements sanitation standards and safety practices which includes energy conservation, recycling and waste disposal.

    13.  Maintain and monitor substitute personnel programs in Nutrition Services.

    14.  Provides training to staff in areas of food production, sanitation and safety.

    15.  Establish open communication interactions with Nutrition Services employees and continually build relationships with trust and respect.

    16.  Cultivate and model a respectful working and learning environment.

    17.  Participate as an effective team member.

    18.  Attends work regularly and is punctual.

 

       MARGINAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

       Marginal duties of this position include the following.  Employees in this position perform some or all of the following tasks.  Other related duties may be assigned.

 

     1.  Assists office staff as necessary including answering telephones, routing telephone calls or messages to appropriate staff, operating general office machinery including photocopy machine and computer.

 

       SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Supervises Nutrition Services staff.  All school employees have some responsibility for supervising students and assisting in maintaining a safe environment.       

 

         QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education and/or Experience:  A minimum of three years school food service experience with one or more years in a supervisory role.
  • Interpersonal Skills:  Demonstrate a history of strong leadership and communication skills.  Demonstrate successful experience in dealing with professional staff.  Ability to effectively work and communicate with students, parents, and school personnel from diverse cultures or backgrounds.  Maintain integrity of confidential information relating to students, staff, or district patrons.
  • Language Skills:  Ability to communicate fluently, verbally and in writing in English.  Ability to effectively present information and respond effectively to questions.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals and governmental regulations.  Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Mathematical Skills:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio percent mean mode.
  • Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, schedule or diagram form.  Ability to deal with problems involving several variables in a variety of situations.
  • Computer Skills:  Knowledge of computer usage and ability to use database software, e-mail, internet software, spreadsheets, and word processing software.
  • Other Skills and Abilities:  Ability to appropriately communicate with students, teachers, parents and members of the community.  Ability to exercise good judgment and work in an environment with constant interruptions.  Extensive knowledge of federal and state legal standards and regulations..
  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Ability to obtain a valid Food Handler's card, CPR/First Aid card, and Oregon Drivers License.

        PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

 

     1.  Moderate to high degree of physical stamina and frequent lifting up to 50 pounds.

     2.  Frequent sitting, walking, kneeling, crouching, bending, crawling, reaching, twisting, handle, feel and reach with hands and arms, and prolonged periods of standing.

     3.  Exposure to noise, heat, cold, hot and cold surfaces, and sharp and moving equipment.

     4.  Requires coordination and dexterity to prepare foods.

     .  Ability to move freely around the kitchen and storage areas to perform food preparation and food serving duties.

 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, ability to adjust focus and peripheral vision.
