About Academy of the Pacific Rim

Academy of the Pacific Rim Charter Public School (APR) is a free, public charter school offering a rigorous college preparatory program to 525 students in 5th through 12th grade. For 21 years, APR has been committed to serving students of Boston – our students come primarily from Mattapan, Roxbury, Dorchester, and Hyde Park – with the goal of closing the opportunity and achievement gap.

At the Academy of the Pacific Rim, our program incorporates qualities from east Asian sources into a high-performing college preparatory curriculum. We teach Mandarin beginning in the eighth grade and we encourage students to participate in our exchange program with our sister school in Beijing. We operate as an integrated middle and high school and provide extensive college placement and alumni supports. Our work is grounded in the belief that all students can achieve at the highest levels and that all students should see opportunities to contribute in their community and abroad.

APR is guided by foundational principles of agency and equity. Our mission is foster student agency, empowering all learners in our building, and we work daily to build independence in our students. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Middle School Principal oversees all aspects of grades 5-8, managing a comprehensive vision and strategy for meeting the unique needs of 300 middle school students and preparing them for our high school. The Principal provides instructional leadership and fosters a positive school culture with a team of approximately 25 teachers and learning specialists. In addition, the Principal serves as member of the Kaizen Leadership Team, focusing on organizational priorities, development, and financial expenditures for the overall school.

Specific Responsibilities

- Ensure each student receives:high-quality instruction; the right amount of support, demand, voice, and choice; support services, ranging from tutoring to special education, in
conjunction with the Dean of Support Services and our ELL Coordinator
- Observe classrooms frequently to ensure highly effective lessons
- Design weekly professional development sessions for staff related to school-wide professional development themes
- Communicate with and engage families of students
- Recruit, interview, hire, evaluate, develop (evaluate), retain, and, when necessary, dismiss staff of 25 individuals
- Create a culture of achievement through classroom instruction, daily rituals, special events, and support of the Dean of Students
- Create a culture which builds students’ thinking skills and social and emotional competencies

      - Significant experience working with underserved youth
