Job Description

Perkins School for the Blind, located near Boston, was the first school for the blind chartered in the United States in 1829. For over 180 years, Perkins School for the Blind has provided quality educational and residential services to students who are blind, visually impaired or deafblind, empowering them to reach their maximum potential. The Teaching Assistant supports the teacher working with students aged 14-22 who are blind and multiply impaired. This teaching assistant will be primarily assigned to teachers in the Math department and Work Activities.

Responsibilities include:

-Providing instructional support to students typing.
-Using specialized computer programs (Filemaker Pro, Scientific Notebook, Duxbury, and Tiger-training will be provided) to create tactile diagrams.
-Embossing math worksheets for 4 different teachers, delivering direct assistance to math teachers as needed and recording payroll data in Work Activities.
-The candidate should be comfortable instructing small groups or individual students as needed.
-Use Filemaker Pro to record student attendance and assignments in Work Activities. Responsibilities in the Work Activities area include assisting within the classroom and monitoring students working outside the classroom on and off Perkins campus.
-Typical tasks students perform in Work Activities include simple sorting, deliveries, and inspections.

    Job Requirements

    • -High School diploma. Interest in learning to use technology to produce tactile graphics.
      -Must be able to complete First Aid/CPR certification and CPPI training.
      -Must be able to lift 20-35 pounds.

      Preference will be given to candidates with:

      -Associate’s or Bachelor’s degrees in a related field.
      -Experience with a special needs population, knowledge of the Braille code, experience using adaptive equipment and computer programs.
      -Valid driver’s license and willingness to drive school vehicles including vans.
    • At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred
    • High School/Trade School degree preferred
    • Citizenship, residency OR WORK VISA IN United States required
