Job Description

Qualifications: Master’s Degree in Social Work or Counseling. Certification as a School Social Worker or Adjustment Counselor by New Hampshire Department of Education. Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Knowledge of theoretical frameworks of intellectual, social, and emotional development. Familiarity with philosophy, principles, and practices in social work or counseling. Familiarity with mental health and emotional impairments including learning disorders affecting student achievement. Familiarity with prevention and treatment of substance abuse, physical and sexual abuse, and violence in students. Experience with crisis management and intervention. Knowledge of medical conditions and medication related to physical disabilities and learning disorders.

Position requires a valid driver’s license and ability to travel, close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Reports to: Principal

Job Goal: Adjustment Counselor contribute to student success in visible and meaningful ways. The Adjustment Counselor supports a comprehensive developmental counseling program for all students to improve the educational outcomes of students, especially students who are experiencing barriers to learning. Adjustment Counselor structures activities to meet the needs of students; collaborates with teachers, staff, and parents to enhance their effectiveness in helping students; and works in harmony with the school staff to promote student achievement.

Type of Position: 10 Month - 180 School Days 8 Workshop Days

- Responsible to the Principal working in conjunction with the Director of Student Services.
- Implements a Comprehensive School Counseling Program, which addresses the Counseling Standards and Student Priorities.
- Works with teachers and parents to meet the needs of students through the development of academic, personal, social, and career awareness activities.
- Counsels small groups and individual students.
- Organizes structured counseling activities for “at-risk” youth, i.e., issues around social responsibility.
- Consults with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of student.
- Assists elementary, middle and high school transition.
- Consults and coordinates as appropriate, with in-district professionals (i.e. School Psychologist, Social Worker and Guidance Counselor).
- Refers students with critical needs, in consultation with parents, to appropriate community resources and follow up with students, as warranted.
- Participates in counseling activities that contribute to the effectiveness and operation of the school.
- Operates as an advocate with all students utilizing skills that respect issues of cultural and ethnic diversity and equity for every student and family.
- Contribute to the ongoing development implement, evaluation and revision of the school.
- Assesses the School Adjustment Counselors’ role in supporting the School Improvement Plan.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Maintains records consistent with ethical and legal guidelines. Operate within the federal and state laws and complies with District and school procedures and policies.
- Perform responsibilities in an organized, accurate, timely and dependable manner. Provides support for other school programs and personnel.
- Attend District Professional Development activities and other meetings. Keeps informed on current professional trends. Pursue professional growth.
- Utilizes computers effectively in the performance of assigned duties and responsibilities.
- Meets with parents at a variety of location’s and works with agencies to support family/student needs.
