Job Description

Anticipated Start Date - Monday, 5/7/18

Classes Taught

5th-8th Grade Bands

5th-8th Grade Choruses

5th-8th Grade Music Enrichment/Solo Performance

5th Grade General Music

General Information

This position requires someone with experience in teaching both instrumental and vocal music. All chorus concerts will be complete by the end of the year, assuming the maternity leave will begin after 4/3/18. The balance of the year will be spent working on musical literacy, basic sight-reading, and learning new repertoire that students help select (largely pop music).

The 6th-8th grade bands will have one if not two obligations before the end of the school year, both of which are fairly straight-forward. The first of which is the Memorial Day Parade. The obligation is from approximately 10am-12:30pm on Memorial Day itself. The students are expected to perform a march, a military song, and those who are ready the Star Spangled Banner. The second obligation is playing a very simple arrangement of Pomp and Circumstance at the 8th Grade Graduation, which is typically on a weeknight in mid-June. This should be at the discretion of the administration, as the obligation can easily be fulfilled with a recording of the piece VS live band music. The 5th grade band will have fulfilled their performances for the year, again assuming the leave begins after 4/3/18. They will be wrapping up their first year as young instrumentalists and will continue working on fundamentals.

The 5th & 6th Grade Music Enrichment classes are student-driven, but teacher facilitated. We largely work on writing screenplays, composing music/selecting soundtrack/sound effects for the screenplays, smaller composition projects (including found-sound compositions), and storytelling. The 8th Grade class is dedicated to Solo Performance, inclusive of students who have an interest in public speaking. Most students choose to work on music of the pop, country, and R&B genres.

The 5th Grade General Music class meets only once per week for 9-10 weeks across the quarter. They will be in the middle of a unit on Opera, which focuses on both listening and differentiation of components of opera.
