Earn an additional credential in special education and expand student
access to high quality teaching


TNTP is a national leader in advancing great teaching and has been training
and certifying teachers in Louisiana since 2001. Our teachers come from all
backgrounds and teach critical subjects such as math, science and special
education, working in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish, Baton Rouge, and
across the state.

Every day, teachers change lives. It’s not easy to defy the odds, and great
teaching doesn’t happen overnight. We support teachers in the development
of skills to improve student outcomes starting on day one.


TNTP is offering a yearlong Special Education Add On program designed
for already licensed teachers in Louisiana who wish to become effective
special educators and continue teaching full-time.

The program begins in June with flexible summer requirements that allow
participants to join from any location. The program continues into the
school year with online coursework, individualized coaching, and virtual
and in person development sessions. Specifically, the program will cover
the following topics:

  • Cycle 1:
    Introduction to Special Education (Summer 2018)
  • Cycle 2:
    Understanding and Planning for Student Needs (Fall 2018)
  • Cycle 3:
    Collaborating to Teach Foundational Skills (Winter 2019)
  • Cycle 4:
    Preparing Students for College and Career (Spring 2019)

The program will offer a full continuum of research-based preparation
experiences that will lead individuals to become effective special
education teachers capable of making a measurable impact on student
achievement. The program runs from June 2018-May 2019 with a time
commitment of approximately 10 hours per week for teachers
throughout the year. Components of the program include:

  • Virtual summer programming:
    Participants will engage in flexible programing that can be completed
    from any location, including an introduction to special education
    course and video analysis of exemplary special education classrooms.
  • Online coursework:
    Participants will complete 40 online modules throughout the school
    year, covering topics such as special education history and law,
    differentiated instruction, collaboration with the IEP team, and impact
    of disability.
  • Individualized development sessions:
    Each participant will have one-on-one meetings to identify development
    goals and focus areas for growth specific to their students and
  • Observations and coaching
    : Participants will have regular observations in their special
    education setting and receive individualized support related to their
    development goals and online coursework.
  • Webinar-based discussions:
    Participants will discuss online coursework, problem solve around
    teachers’ needs and challenges, and review new research and best
    practices in special education.
  • Student growth portfolio
    : Participants will complete the year with a student growth portfolio
    to report, reflect on, and discuss how they have addressed a student’s
    progress towards IEP goals.

The 2018-2019 tuition cost of the TNTP Academy Special Education Add On
program is $4,400.


We’re looking for Louisiana certified general education (i.e. Elementary,
ELA, Math, Science, etc.) teachers who are dedicated to closing the
achievement gap for all students. Specifically, we’re looking for teachers
who can:

  • Teach in a special education setting for at least one class period
    a day

  • Case manage or co-case manage for at least one student with an IEP

  • Participate in and complete a virtual, flexible summer curriculum
