Job Description

Milton Hershey School (MHS) is seeking a Horticultural Instructional Advisor in the School’s Agricultural and Environmental Education programs. Milton Hershey School provides agricultural and educational experiences and programming for the student body of over 2000 students. This position provides leadership for the MHS Horticultural Center which is a 135 acre horticultural enterprise including greenhouses and an education center designed to engage students for the purposes of:
-enhancing student achievement in all academic areas through first hand experiences that provide an authentic context for learning,
-fostering improved agricultural and environmental literacy,
-and facilitating development of life and career skills.

The Horticultural Instructional Advisor is responsible for:
-Collaborating with faculty and others to deliver high quality age appropriate horticultural instruction and experiences.
-Creating and overseeing after-school and weekend programming and activities including fostering participation in extra-curricular activities such as FFA and 4H clubs.
-Oversee and assist with greenhouse production operations including watering, fertilizing, sowing, transplanting, propagation and facility maintenance.
-Oversee and assist with landscape maintenance including weeding, watering, fertilizing, transplanting, pruning and mowing.
-Supervising staff and students.
-Ensuring student and staff safety throughout full scope of operations.
-Budget oversight, purchasing, inventory control and other administrative duties.
-Collaborating in the development and expansion of value-add initiatives such as a year-round project market.
-Acting as a liaison with external vendors and resources such as 4H and FFA.

  • Job Requirements

    • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Agriculture or closely related degree.
      3 plus years of experience developing and delivering horticultural and/or agricultural learning experiences with children and youth preferred. Experience with multi-cultural and/or lower income students a plus.
      Experienced in the management and oversight of greenhouses, gardens and fields.
      Demonstrated skills in safely utilizing trucks, tractors, mowers, roto-tillers and other gas powered equipment.
      Knowledgeable regarding emerging plant science technologies
      Ensuring safe utilization of chemicals (fertilizers and pesticides). Commercial pesticide license Category – Schools and Parks required.
      Basic computer skills with Microsoft Outlook, Word and Powerpoint. Knowledge of Greenhouse software preferred.
      Demonstrated skills in pro-actively and effectively collaborating with others to implement and complete projects and programs.
      Pro-actively and independently manage time effectively to complete multiple tasks and projects efficiently.
      Must be willing to actively engage with students.
      Candidates should demonstrate a high degree of integrity as all MHS staff are considered to be role models for students.
