The Lynn Public Schools, a flourishing, vibrant urban district, invites candidates for the position of Superintendent of Schools.  Lynn is a city with a proud past and a strong future.  It is a richly diverse city of approximately 90,000 persons.  The City of Lynn is poised for growth and will count on the Lynn Public Schools to prepare the next generation to lead by educating its students, diverse in their backgrounds, needs and goals, with excellence and innovation.  Conveniently located ten miles north of Boston, it has proximity to major highways, rail transit and Logan International Airport.  It is a short distance from major urban attractions, including theaters, professional sports and major institutions of higher learning.


The Prek-12 district has approximately 16,000 students from a multiplicity of ethnic, racial and linguistic backgrounds.  The city has exhibited a commitment to new and creative educational challenges.  There is a focus on teaching and learning supported by excellent professional development programs.  The school system has state-of-the-art early childhood programs, a state and federally funded extended-day program, multiple after-school programs as well as non-user fee interscholastic boys and girls athletic programs.


The successful candidate must have demonstrated communication and leadership skills; a comprehensive understanding of school budget and finance; experience with capital projects; and a passion and commitment to high academic achievement for all students.  Licensed as superintedent of schools, doctorate preferred.  Mininum of 15 years in school administration and teaching experience.  The school committee offers a multiyear contract and a competitive salary and benefits commensurate with qualifications and experience.  Applicants are advised that the city is in the process of exempting the position of Superintendent of Schools from a residency requirement.  It is anticipated that the current residency requirement will be revised prior to the hiring decision.  The application deadline is:  3:00 p.m. on March 30, 2018 with a projected starting date of July 1, 2018 or per availability.

As the chief executive officer of the Lynn Public Schools, the Superintendent will be responsible for:

  1. Leading the development and implementation of the budget for the Lynn Public Schools after adoption by the school committee
  2. Educational planning with a commitment to vocational, STEAM, special education and ELL support
  3. Competent strategic planning, implementation and oversight
  4. Organizational development, operations and business management
  5. Supervision of staff selection, personnel management, professional development, and participation in collective bargaining
  6. Monitoring and measuring school improvement and effectiveness under the MA state accountability and assessment system
  7. Experience with collective bargaining, and post negotiations contract administration
  8. Key leadership role in the city's efforts to build much-needed new schools and to work with the city and state officials to develop a plan for maintaining existing facilities
  9. Effective leadership with a highly visible and inclusive management style 
  10. Collaborative, accessible leadership committed to the educational excellence of all students with a focus on equity and diversity, and on eliminating opportunity gaps and engaging with outside educational agencies, non-profits, families and the community



  • Licensed as a superintendent of schools in MA (required)
  • Advanced degree required or doctorate preferred

  5. A student-centered instructional leader who upholds academic excellence for all students and who understands and supports the role of social emotional learning & the whole child
  6. A knowledgeable and transparent problem solver with expertise in finance, facilities - including capital projects, legislative advocacy and negotiations with a strong command of Massachusetts curriculum, education policies and law
  7. A leader who can build a strong relationship with municipal government, the chief financial officer, local leaders, and city departments that work with the public schools
