Job Title:         Library/Media Services Aide                              Exemption Status/Test: Nonexempt

Reports to:      Principal/Director of Library/Media Services      Date Revised: 3/2018

Dept./School:  Junior High School (7th & 8th Grades)


Postion Open Until Filled


Primary Purpose:

Responsible for day-to-day on-site operation of campus (Library, Makerspace, media center).  Will work under supervision or oversight of Director of Library/Media Services and Campus Principal.




High school diploma or GED



Special Knowledge/Skills:

Proficient keyboarding and file maintenance skills

Ability to shelve books following district cataloging system

Ability to use library and media center resources to conduct research

Ability to work well with children

Ability to instruct and manage student behavior

Effective, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills



2 years experience working with children (preferred)

Knowledge of or willingness to learn 7th & 8th grade TEKS

Knowledge of Makerspace


Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Library Program Support

  1. Implement school library program and create a library/media center environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity level and interests of students.
  2. Help library patrons use library/media center resources including computers and other equipment.
  3. Provide individual and group instruction for students and other library users and help them locate resources and use research techniques.
  4. Reinforce reading instruction.  May read to small groups of students and listen to individual students read aloud.
  5. Check books in and out. Collect and record fines.
  6. Ready materials for classroom or reserve collection use as requested by teachers.
  7. Request and schedule use of materials from outside sources including regional education service center.
  1. Prepare bulletin boards, displays, and instructional materials.
  2. Make recommendations for acquisitions and equipment as needed


Accounting and Inventory

  1. Receive and process new books, materials, and equipment and reconcile with packing slips and invoices. Shelve returned books, materials, and equipment.
  2. Perform routine maintenance and repair books, magazines, materials, and equipment. Arrange for repair at outside facilities (e.g., bindery) as directed.
  3. Assist in the annual inventory and weeding of library media center materials.


Clerical Support

  1. Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records, and other documents as required.
  2. Prepare bibliographies, forms, purchase orders, requisitions, and routine correspondence according to standard procedures.


Student Management

  1. Monitor students and maintain appropriate student behavior and an orderly atmosphere.



  1. Assist in directing the work of parent volunteers and student aides.

Tools/Equipment Used: Standard office equipment including computer and peripherals; standard library equipment including imaging equipment; standard instructional equipment

Posture: Regular sitting, standing, kneeling, squatting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and twisting

Motion: Repetitive hand motions; frequent keyboarding and use of mouse; regular overhead reaching; climbing ladders

Lifting: Frequent light lifting and occasional moderate lifting and carrying

Environment: Work inside; work alone; exposure to biological and chemical hazards such as mold and dust

Mental Demands: Work with frequent interruption; maintain emotional control under stress
