Athletic Director – Smith Academy
Title: Athletic Director – Smith Academy
Reports To: Principal

Supervises: Athletic coaches and other personnel as designated by the principal or the superintendent.

Job Function: To provide each enrolled student of secondary school age an
opportunity to participate in an extracurricular athletic activity that will foster physical skills, a sense of worth and competence, a knowledge and understanding of the pleasures of sport, and the principles of fair play in accordance with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

– Organizes and administers the overall program of extracurricular athletics for the school system.
– Provides leadership in the selection, assignment, and evaluation of athletic coaches and staff members. As well as evaluation for reappointment.
– Fosters good school-community relations by keeping the community aware of and responsive to the athletic program.
– Assumes responsibility for the organization and scheduling of all interscholastic athletic events, including practices, scrimmages, and contests.
– Hires officials, team physician, and policemen as required, and assumes responsibility for the proper supervision of home games.
– Arranges transportation for athletic contest participants.
– Develops and places into operation appropriate rules and regulations governing the conduct of athletic activities in accordance with MIAA and PVIAC regulations.
– Verifies each athlete’s eligibility according to established physical and academic requirements of eligibility for participation in each sport.
– Prepares and administers the athletic program budget with the approval of the principal or superintendent.
– Requisitions program supplies and equipment.
– Supervises all ticket sales of the athletic program, and assumes responsibility for proper handling of funds including, but not limited to, the collection of user fees.
– Arranges all details of visiting teams’ needs, including towels, gymnasium services, and field assistance as appropriate.
– Arranges field and gym practice schedules.
– Accounts for the physical examination of all athletes prior to the beginning of each season.
– Keeps records of the results of all middle and high school athletic contests, and maintains a record file of all award winners, stating the date and type of award, including athletic scholarships.
– Directs an in-school (where appropriate) extracurricular program designed to foster support for the athletic teams and school spirit among non-participants.
– Plans and coordinates an annual recognition program for school athletes.
– Manages building utilization.
– Liaison with MIAA and other outside agencies.
– Acts as a Mandated Reporter (Chapter 119, Section 51A).
– Complies with the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Policy.
– Any other duties as may be assigned by Administration.

– The employee must possess excellent administrative and communication skills. The employee is expected to be an excellent role model for sportsmanship. Has the ability to interact respectfully with teachers, parents, students, and community members to promote a positive view of the school. Has the ability the respond appropriately to criticism from parents/guardians. Has the ability to work as a member of a team to promote the mission and goals of the school.
– Competency in technology as it relates to athletic programs and student health.

The position requires a frequent amount of walking, running, standing, sitting, and climbing stairs and a stepstool whenever necessary. Activities also include frequent physical exertion in body movement such as reaching, bending, twisting, grasping, pushing, and pulling of objects. The position requires lifting objects up to forty (40) pounds on a frequent basis, and over forty pounds occasionally.

The employee is required to work indoors and outdoors. Extreme temperature and weather conditions may be encountered. The use of athletic equipment is also sometimes required.

– Required: At least two years of prior work experience as a coach, physical education teacher, or equivalent athletic leadership position.
– Preferred: Prior work experience as an athletic director or equivalent.

– Required to have an acceptable CORI check as determined by the Superintendent.
