Headwaters School, a Pre-K through grade 12 independent day school serving 540 students across its three campuses in Austin, TX, is seeking a new head of its middle school (grade 6-8) for the 2018-2019 school year. With 106 students in the middle school, Headwaters provides a warm and welcoming school culture for its students, while expecting curiosity, deep engagement, and self-expression of each of its community members (teachers included). Students, faculty, and staff are known on a first-name basis and pride themselves on direct communication and strong, caring relationships.
We are seeking candidates who revel in the developmental period known as early adolescence and who embody three traits that are dear to us: inquiry, engagement, and self-expression. The successful candidate will have experience with and demonstrate effectiveness in teaching, coaching, and supporting middle school students through these formative years. Prior teaching experience is a must, and we are especially interested in candidates who have experience working on issues of diversity, inclusion, and multiculturalism. Administrative experience is strongly desired, and, because our fourth/fifth grade program is Montessori-based, we are very interested in meeting candidates who have experience or training in that area.
The Middle School Head reports directly to the Head of School and works closely with the River Campus Head. S/he serves on the Senior Administrative Team as well.
In addition to teaching experience and dynamic undergraduate and/or graduate preparation, the successful candidate will need to possess the following attributes: resilience, tolerance for ambiguity, and a sense of adventure.
This is a full-time, salaried, exempt position and compensation is competitive for the greater Austin area.
