TITLE: Director of Special Education

REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools

1. Master’s degree in education with academic training in special education
2. Massachusetts Certification as a Special Education Administrator
3. Minimum of 5 years of experience in education, part of which must be in supervision

1. Supervises all special education staff and programs including, but not necessarily limited to:
• Special education instructional programs
• Speech language program
• Physical and occupational therapy program
• School psychology program
• Social worker program
• Special education Pre-School (3 & 4 year olds) program
• BCBA program
• Team Chairperson
• Out of District Placement Chairperson
• District special education clerical support staff
• Early Childhood Coordinator
• Assistant Director of Special Education
2. Establishes and/or supervises procedures by which eligible students are placed, maintained, or discharged from special education programs including out-of-district placements.
3. Prepares and monitors the special education budget (including circuit breaker).
4. Works with transportation providers to coordinator a program for students with special needs in accordance with state and local guidelines.
5. Maintains district operations which comply with legal requirements governing special education.
6. Assumes responsibility for the preparation and completion of all mandated state special education reporting.
7. Represents the school system at meetings involving the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Valley Collaborative, and other groups related to the special education programs.
8. Provides leadership in establishing new special education programs, evaluating existing special education programs and recommending changes as needed.
9. Supervises the maintenance of records of all children receiving special education services in compliance with state regulations.
10. Approves requests for materials and supplies used in special education programs and maintains an appropriate inventory of such equipment.
11. Ensures compliance with the district’s Child Find obligations.
12. Responsible for writing and overseeing all special education grants.
13. Participates in the requirement, selection, and assignment of all special education personnel.
14. Develops mandated in-service training programs for members of the special education and general education staff.
15. Represents the school department in interagency activities.
16. Interprets special education regulations for all school personnel and to the community at large.
17. Prepares and presents reports to the Superintendent of Schools and others as requested.
18. Serves as a resource to the Special Education Parent Advisory Council.
19. Assumes responsibility in legal proceedings and court hearings on any matter pertaining to Special Education.
20. Ensures continuity of special education programs across all levels from PK-Age 22.
21. Works with Guidance and Health personnel to coordinate services to students.
22. Collaborates with building Principals and district administrators to coordinate services for students.
23. Oversees the coordination of Extended School Year Programs.
24. Approves temporary home/hospital tutoring requests.
25. Performs other such duties as deemed necessary by the Superintendent of Schools.

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Negotiable, commensurate with education and experience.
