Organization Background:
Since 2008, TCSA has worked to accelerate student achievement in Texas by strengthening and supporting a diverse set of effective, public charter schools. We believe that every parent should have the opportunity to choose the free, public school that best fits their student’s needs and Texas families are speaking out! In 2017-18, charter schools serve 273,000 students in 613 campuses across the state with an estimated 141,000 students waiting for a seat at a charter school. Representing more than 90 percent of public charter school students across the state, TCSA provides its members with charter-specific training opportunities, legal services and updates to state and federal laws and rules, and discounts on services so more school funding can be directed to the classroom. TCSA, along with its advocacy affiliate Charter Schools Now, also works at the Texas Capitol and U.S. Congress year-round on behalf of public charter schools.

Job Description:
The Director of Communications will serve as the Deputy Spokesperson for the Texas Charter Schools Association (TCSA) and is responsible for media relations, proactive outreach for stories highlighting effective charters and all mission types, increasing the number of positive charter school stories across all regions and increasing awareness of public charter schools in Texas. This position will also execute the long-term vision and mission of TCSA and help the organization gain visibility by identifying and cultivating media opportunities. The ideal candidate must be comfortable prioritizing multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment. A successful candidate will have experience working in a team, writing for a variety of stakeholders, and flourishing in a deadline-oriented atmosphere. The Director of Communications reports to the Vice President of Government & Public Affairs. The Director also helps prepare the association CEO, board members, and member schools for media interviews and related events. The position also provides communication support to Charter Schools Now.

Essential Job Functions:
• Execute the strategic communications plan with metrics, utilizing both traditional and new media, to broaden charter schools and TCSA visibility and reach, and help the organization meet its strategic goals.
• Cultivate and manage press relationships to maximize coverage of charter schools, including pitching reporters, responding to media requests, writing op-eds and letters, creating messaging and language and gathering stories from constituents.
• Manage media lists and media coverage to improve positive impressions of Texas public charter schools and respond quickly to misinformation. Write Op-eds and LTEs as needed.
• Manage social media accounts and track analytics.
• Develop materials to disseminate to stakeholders such as elected officials, charter school leaders, parents and advocates and members of the media.
• Update website and create and manage content for blog, as well as internal and external communications including weekly newsletter.
• Monitor media and maintain coverage metrics in order to improve positive impressions of Texas charter schools.
• Prepare speeches and talking points as needed for the CEO, and board.
• Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor’s degree, in communications, journalism, government/public policy or a closely related field.
2. At least five (5) years of professional experience in communications is required.
3. Skilled writer with attention to detail. Excellent communicator on all levels who can communicate complex issues to the media, our internal and external stakeholders.
4. Proven ability to create and implement an effective, broad reaching, multi-pronged, communications plan that drives unified messages to diverse audiences and geographic regions.
5. Experience pitching/developing strong relationships w/ traditional & new media.
6. Experience providing creative communications support, editing support, and strategy to multiple internal project teams simultaneously.
7. Experience using new and emerging media communications tools to enhance and amplify an organization’s core messages.
8. Must be a goal-oriented team player who can pay close attention to detail while multi-tasking.
9. Evidence of high-level organizational and analytical skills, and ability to manage and coordinate a number of projects and tasks simultaneously.
10. Proficient with Microsoft Office and related software, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and new media applications.
11. Knowledge of charter schools and the charter movement desired, but not requisite.

This position is exempt from the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). TCSA office hours are 9 to 5 pm, but the Director from time to time may work an extended schedule, including weekends and evenings according to demands of the role and tasks.
