Job Description


Provides physical education classes, adaptive physical education classes, and health instruction for elementary and middle school students.


Shift Type: Part-Time, 15 hours per week 


  • Develops and implements health curricula for various elementary and middle school classrooms
  • Develops and implements weekly lessons in health education that are aligned with national and state standards
  • Develops and implements physical education programs and provides small group, whole class and individualized instruction as needed
  • Develops and implements adaptive physical education programs for all identified students
  • Provides individual support and carry-over of skills introduced in the program
  • Develops and implements students’ goals as listed in their Individualized Education Plans
  • Completes all assessments and screens as needed
  • Provides accurate progress monitoring of goals and all reporting of student progress
  • Creates opportunities and supports students participating in community-based recreational activities that take place during or outside of the school day
  • Provides instruction and support to students in the therapy pool
  • Participate in budget and grant writing as needed or requested
  • Attends and actively supports out of school and family events, especially those that are related to our physical education program i.e. CVS and Ronald McDonald House All Kids Can Races, Special Olympics, Field Day, etc.
  • Attends and participates in all meetings as required
  • Engages in professional development opportunities


  • Maintains all physical education equipment as needed for implementation of program
  • Maintains all health education related supplies and materials as needed for implementation of health curricula
  • Assists in the evacuation of school age children during fire drills or other emergencies. Performs other duties as directed or required

  • Extensive knowledge and expertise in Physical Education, Adaptive Physical Education and Health preferred
  • Prior experience working with children with or without learning disabilities


  • Access to all Hope Academy student records
  • Use and disclose PHI only as authorized, as necessary to carry out job duties
  • Complete and maintain privacy and security training
  • Report suspected violations, including those of a business associate or contractor
  • Professionalism in/outside of the school


  • Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree in Physical Education
  • RIDE Certified in Physical Education and Adaptive Physical Education
  • Current American Red Cross Lifeguard certification or ability to obtain certification within a few months
  • Current CPR/First Aid Certified or ability to obtain within a few months of employment
  • Current Safety Care Trained or ability to obtain within a few months of employment
  • Sports/recreation background helpful


  • Work environment and physical requirements consistent with those of a typical school environment
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk continuously throughout the workday
  • Able to follow/run 25 yards to secure students for safety reasons such as elopement, as needed
  • Bend, stoop, squat, push and pull (10-15% of the time)
  • Kneel and reach above shoulder level occasionally (1-33% of the time)
  • Utilize the Computer (20%) of the time and other office equipment
  • Lift and carry students as well as transfer students from wheelchairs to equipment as required. Usually requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds frequently with the assistance of another staff member or adaptive equipment; 50 pounds independently (67-100% of the time)
  • Ability to participate in physical restraints of students, as needed and trained
  • Physically able to position physical/occupational therapy equipment, splints, etc. Ability to use various equipment (switches, cooking equipment, etc.)
