POSITION: Teacher

QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s Degree in the area of certification preferred.
Valid Teaching License recognized by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education or evidence of eligibility to obtain such licensure within one year of employment.
Must meet NCLB definition of Highly Qualified by demonstrating subject matter competency.
Experience using technology in the classroom preferred.
At least one year of teaching experience preferred.
Strong communication skills, both written and spoken.
Ability to relate well to others.

REPORTS TO: Site Leaders

SUPERVISION:
Oversees work of paraprofessionals in the classroom. As directed by the Site Leaders, may contribute to paraprofessional annual evaluation.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- STANDARDS BASED CLASSROOM:

Adherence to MA Curriculum Frameworks and ACS Curriculum:
1.Addresses learning standards in a clear and concise manner;
2.Consistently makes specific verbal references to learning standards;
3.Makes standards clearly visible, in writing, in age-appropriate student friendly language on a continuous basis;
4.Makes explicit connections with learning standards from lesson to lesson;
5.Demonstrates expectations of student achievement by giving students concrete examples/models of high quality products that represent mastery of the learning standards;
6.Gives students descriptions, verbally and/or in writing, in age appropriate language, of what constitutes a high quality product;

Efficient Organization and Execution of Lesson Plans:
1.Creates well planned and organized lessons, which include clearly stated objectives connected with the learning standards;
2.Develops lesson plans in a clear and logical manner;
3.Puts plan for the day in writing, in age appropriate language (e.g. an agenda);
4.Communicates lesson objectives, verbally and/or in writing, in age appropriate language;
5.Ensures all components of the lesson contribute to the lesson objectives and to the mastery of the standard(s);
6.Adapts curriculum and lesson plans to meet the varying rates, patterns and needs of all students, including students who extend learning beyond designated outcomes;
7.Uses time efficiently and purposefully in carrying out the lesson;
8.Ensures students follow classroom routines, minimizing time spent on receiving directions;
9.Spends minimal class time on organizational details;
10.Ensures class time spent on homework supports the lesson;
11.Spends the majority of class time on developing new knowledge and skills;
12.Spends majority of time in actively engaging learning activities;
13.Allots sufficient time to conclude lesson in a meaningful and appropriate way;
14.Uses multiple grouping strategies to ensure students learn objectives of the lesson (e.g. individual, small groups, whole class, teacher-student);
15.Ensures grouping strategy and composition of groups is appropriate for the task to be accomplished;
16.Provides clear guidelines and expectations for group work;

Effective Management of the Classroom Environment:
1.Creates an environment where students feel safe and are willing to take risks;
2.Fosters positive, respectful relationships within the classroom (teacher – student, student – student);
3.Makes explicit expectations regarding supportive learning relationships;
4.Ensures all communications within the classroom is respectful and appropriate;
5.Ensures the appearance and physical organization of the classroom contributes to a positive learning environment;
6.Displays student work which demonstrates clear expectations related to the standards;
7.Creates an efficient, functional environment by purposefully arranging the physical space;
8.Arranges desk and/or tables to allow for teacher mobility and access;
9.Ensures climate in room (cleanliness, temperature, air quality, light) is conducive to learning;

Promotion of Student Learning and Achievement:
1.Engages students in all aspects of lesson(s);
2.Ensures student behavior is appropriate for the lesson and/or activity;
3.Monitors verbal and non-verbal cues indicating student engagement (e.g. questions, responses, eye contact, attentiveness, posture);
4.Requires students to have and utilize appropriate materials (e.g. textbook, homework);
5.Expects students to follow directions and accomplish all assigned tasks;
6.Addresses inappropriate behavior consistently and appropriately;
7.Focuses students on subject matter throughout the lesson;
8.Ensures conversation in the classroom is on-task and appropriate;
9.Holds students accountable for demonstrating respect for property and materials;
10.Uses various methods to engage students in learning and understanding the content/subject matter, including: skill building, conceptual understanding, applying strategies, critical thinking and real-world applications;
11.Encourages students to support their reasoning with data and/or evidence;
12.Expects students to use content-specific language that includes vocabulary related to the lesson;
13.Monitors student learning through students’ questions and comments which are an indicator of reflection, understanding and development;
14.Effectively contributes to and manages an individual education program (IEP) plan for students with special needs;

Demonstration of Effective Teaching Strategy;
1.Displays mastery of content knowledge throughout the presentation of lesson(s);
2.Presents content-specific concepts accurately;
3.Explains concepts and ideas in multiple ways to enable student understanding and address different learning styles;
4.Makes connections across ideas and strands;
5.Presents content as a system of ideas, not as unrelated procedures, facts and concepts;
6.Uses probing questions and student responses to make decisions about what direction to take to build or improve student understanding;
7.Uses questions that require more than one-word responses;
8.Uses student level of understanding as a guide in determining how the discussion moves;
9.Scaffolds questions to higher levels of thinking;
10.Incorporates students’ prior knowledge when introducing new concepts;
11.Provides time and opportunities for students to express their understanding and ideas, which are discussed respectfully and used to scaffold learning;
12.Makes explicit connections between students’ prior knowledge and new ideas introduced in lesson(s);
13.Anticipates, identifies and addresses student misconceptions;
14.Redirects students, respectfully, when misconceptions are identified to develop accurate thinking and understanding;
15.Provides students with opportunities to identify and correct their own misconceptions through exploration and discussion;
16.Encourages students to respectfully correct each other’s misconceptions;
17.Uses wait-time effectively to allow meaningful participation of all students;

Appropriate Use of Technology in the Classroom;
1.Makes all tools appropriate to the lesson available in sufficient quantities;
2.Ensures learning tools are easily accessible and functional;
3.Uses manipulatives and technology to connect to the lesson objectives;
4.Provides sufficient instruction and support regarding the use of learning tools;
5.Utilizes current technologies;

Promotion of Equity and Fairness:
1.Expects all students to become proficient in the standard(s) addressed in the lesson;
2.Supports students with special needs as appropriate (e.g. as outlined in the IEP);
3.Provides students with opportunities to experience achievement through the application of effective effort;
4.Engages students in activities appropriate in terms of complexity and pacing for their current level of understanding and skill, but which challenge them to move forward;
5.Gives students opportunities to relate their personal and academic interests to their learning of the content presented;
6.Presents subject matter to students in ways that are responsive to individual learning styles and ways of knowing;
7.Makes fair and ethical judgments;

Measurement of Student Achievement:
1.Uses data from continuous assessment to inform and drive instruction;
2.Assesses understanding through: student responses to questions, observations, self evaluation, alternative assessment, group interactions, student work, student/group presentations, journals/written-reflections, student projects, tests, quizzes, etc;
3.Motivates students to take initiative to develop and further their own learning;
