Position Overview
The ideal candidate will bring direct and successful experience in progressive education leadership within a 1st-4th grade environment, as well as a passion for engaging stakeholders in discussions and strategies to support diversity and equity. She/he must also have a sense of humor, be a supportive team player, and an advocate for the school. The school is celebrating twenty years of operation as an independent school and has cultivated a supportive and can-do community where a “good fit” in leadership is essential.

More than half of the administrative team has been serving the school in their various roles for over a decade. The next two years will bring about changes in leadership because of planned retirements. This tight and trusting team requires an appetite for collaborative decision-making, diligent communication, and a passionate student-centered perspective to leadership.

Job Description
The Head of Lower School reports to the Head of School and serves on the Administrative Team. Lower School includes 1st-4th Grades. Student Support Services and various enrichment programs are included in the supervision responsibilities.
The Head of Lower School should be knowledgeable in using the best practices from a variety of student-centered educational approaches, including an interdisciplinary, hands-on reading and writing workshop, constructivist math, inquiry-based science, and social studies. Our social-emotional program is rooted in the Responsive Classroom philosophy. A working knowledge of and ability to coach teachers in differentiated instruction in a caring, nurturing environment is essential.

The successful candidate should possess a solid understanding of the importance of communication in building relationships between students and adults. She/he should be organized, able to work independently, demonstrate flexibility, and have a willingness to be collaborative and creative. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required, as well as experience and comfort in educational technology.

Administrative Responsibilities
- Prepare appropriate sections of the annual budget and oversee expenditures throughout the year
- Assist in the admission process for the testing, interviewing, and evaluating of student applicants
- Make recommendations to the Head of School regarding the hiring, retention, and assignment of Lower School faculty
- Other duties as assigned by the Head of School

Academic Responsibilities
- Work with faculty to evaluate, refine, and implement a coordinated, sequential, and articulated curriculum in the context of the total school program (PS-8th Grades)
- Plan and lead weekly Lower School division meetings

Parent Responsibilities
- Support faculty in communicating personal and academic progress of students and oversee all correspondences relating to student life programs, discipline, and procedures
- Facilitate additional support services, when needed, in conjunction with teachers, learning support, and the school counselor

Qualifications
- B.S./B.A. and M.S/M.A. in Elementary Education
- Five or more years of teaching or working in an elementary program
- Two or more years in a school-based administrative or leadership role
