POSITION TITLE:  Lower School Theater Director

DEPARTMENT:      Lower School

REPORTS TO:        Head of Lower School

FLSA:                  Exempt

TERM:                 10 Months

 

POSITION SUMMARY:  Charlotte Country Day School, an independent coeducational day school located in Charlotte, NC, is currently recruiting for a dynamic drama instructor to lead our lower school program. The theater director is responsible for producing, staging and directing ten lower school musical theater productions a year and works with the entire lower school (JK-4th grades). The priority deadline for applications is February 23, 2018; applications received after that date will be evaluated only if there is still a need to further assemble a candidate pool.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Writes, directs, and choreographs 10 full-length theater productions each year, for each grade level JK-4th grades
  • Collaborates with the drama assistant to oversee, catalog and maintain props and costumes for each show
  • Selects and writes developmentally appropriate plays for each grade level
  • Collaborates with the assistant drama teacher and technical director on rehearsals and productions
  • Collaborates with lower school administration and teachers to create a rehearsal schedule for each show
  • Is skilled at teaching basic acting and performance skills to children, ages 4-11
  • Is a skilled classroom manager in both small and large groups settings (25 for class level plays and 125 for grade level plays) and provides appropriate structures and discipline
  • Manages and oversees budgets for productions, assemblies and outside performers
  • Acts as an ambassador for the arts to the larger school community
  • Oversees and manages the parent volunteers for each production
  • Attends all faculty and department meetings
  • Collaborates as a member of the fine arts team, working on curriculum and pedagogical practices
  • Upholds the mission and affirmation of community with colleagues, families and students

 

 

REQUIREMENTS AND QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience teaching elementary school drama and/or music
  • Strong musical skills preferred (preferably voice and/or piano)
  • Has strong project management skills
  • Has a strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion work
  • Is facile with technology
  • Demonstrates enthusiasm, a positive outlook, sense of humor and the ability to work in a team-oriented environment
  • Has strong organizational and communication skills
  • Demonstrates flexibility and adaptability
  • Successful completion a criminal background check
