Job Summary:
This Position performs work at journey level skill where licensing requirements and job skills typically require a two-year associates degree or equivalent apprenticeship training. This position makes higher-level non-routine decisions concerning troubleshooting and repair, and/or work organization, priorities and problem resolution.  Training for this position is provided at the Foreman or Supervisor Level. This position may perform training and instruction to other skilled and semi-skilled trades and direct their efforts to complete projects.

  • Associates degree or equivalent in H.V.A.C. Service area
  • Verified Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) or equivalent Universal Technician Certification
  • Verified valid Colorado Driver's License and be insurable by the District's Insurance carrier
  • Demonstrated ability to pass District designated post offer screen lift test
  • Demonstrated knowledge of electrical and pneumatic circuitry
  • Must be skilled or proficient in domestic, commercial, and industrial heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems
  • Applicant must have strong communication skills, a good grasp of practical mathematics, physics, thermodynamics and related chemistry knowledge. Must have working knowledge of computers in order to maintain and operate Building Automation Systems (BAS)
  • Must be able to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with public and co-workers
  • Knowledge of principles of refrigeration, refrigeration theory, air conditioning, pipefitting, and structural layout techniques
  • Ability to recognize and determine the best method for correcting malfunctions; read and interpret blueprints, wire diagrams, operation and maintenance manuals, and engineering specifications
  • Ability and skill to make repairs to a variety of heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, and boiler systems
  • Ability to troubleshoot and replace defective components and reassemble refrigeration units to work according to manufacturers specifications
  • Ability to speak, read, write and understand written and printed instructions, establish harmonious relationships and work cooperatively as a team member to meet district/department goals; communicate courteously to customers and clients
  • Ability to perform job related tasks with minimal direction, suggest improved work methods, and seek additional responsibility
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Perform any and all other duties as assigned


  • Regional or State Mechanical licenses (Refrigeration, Gas Fitter, Sheet Metal)
  • 5+ years of experience due to the broad range of equipment to be serviced
  • Working knowledge of METASYS building automation system (BAS)
  • Higher level computer skills, Internet, Internet Explorer, Word, Excel, I.P. Configuration

Working Conditions:
The HVAC Mechanic works outside in all kinds of weather and inside where he/she is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment such as walk-in freezer units. Occasionally subject to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments. Exposure to repeated, prolonged, or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases may cause toxic effects to eyes, skin, and internal organs.


General Description:

This standard covers work that is performed to repair and modify a variety of heating, air conditioning and refrigeration systems that regulated climatic conditions. Tasks involve AC units from fractional to 100+ tons capacity in school district facilities. Must demonstrate proper methods and techniques involved in the tasks to be accomplished.


Contract Terms:

Twelve Month Position

Licensed/Certified Journey Level Tradesman Salary Schedule - Starting Salary: $42,000 / Nonexempt Employee

Fringe Benefits - as per ACME Agreement
