DC International School (DCI) is a public charter school serving students in grades 6-12 in Washington, DC. The school’s mission is to foster inquiring, engaged, knowledgeable, and caring secondary students who are multi-lingual, culturally competent, and committed to proactively creating a socially just and sustainable world. The school seeks to do this by providing a rigorous IB (International Baccalaureate) and language immersion program to a community of students who represent the diversity of Washington, DC. The vision of the school is that providing this kind of opportunity to a broad group of students will prove the value of a rigorous, inquiry-based, internationally-minded language and cultural education in closing equity gaps based on race, socioeconomic status, and other factors and will cultivate world citizens who can effectively promote social justice and cross-cultural understanding.

DCI’s current enrollment is around 800 students in grades 6-10 at the school’s spacious, state-of-the-art new campus located in the redevelopment complex on the former Walter Reed Hospital site. The school has plans to grow to 1,400-1,500 students in the next few years. The school features the IB Middle Years Programme for students in grades 6-10 and will introduce the Diploma Programme and career pathways opportunities next year to serve students in 11th and 12th grade. In addition to the focus on IB curriculum, DCI is the creation of a consortium of five language-immersion public charter schools in the District of Columbia in order to provide a continued language immersion pathway for students through middle and high school.

Principal Opportunity

DCI is seeking a highly motivated and skilled middle school principal who has passion for: urban education; the International Baccalaureate MYP, DP, and CP Programmes; environmental stewardship; social justice; language immersion education; and most importantly, working with middle school students. DCI’s principals are expected to:

  • Articulate a clear, rigorous instructional vision with a school-wide focus on teaching and learning that is evidence based, data-driven, standards aligned, and rooted in a belief that all students can achieve at high levels;
  • Provide timely feedback, effective coaching, and quality professional development to teachers and staff in order to improve the quality of instruction and student achievement levels throughout the school;
  • Develop and maintain a purposeful school culture for adolescents and adults that fosters a safe, equitable, and inclusive environment conducive to student success;
  • Inspire students, faculty, staff, and other partners to follow the school’s vision and their actions as a leader;
  • Model the principles of being a global citizen while demonstrating a knowledge of and commitment to the culture of a diverse IB school;
  • Build strong relationships with, listen to, and communicate effectively with all school stakeholders;
  • See parents as partners, develop and mobilize resources for active parent community involvement;
  • Set appropriate goals while also anticipating challenges, organizing people and resources as needed to keep the school on track;
  • Model continuous learning as demonstrated in an openness to feedback and a willingness to improve their own practice as leaders.

In order to fulfill these responsibilities, the ideal Principal candidate will be:

  • An accomplished educator with a minimum of 5-7 years professional experience and a minimum of three years teaching experience including demonstrated success serving a socio-economically diverse population of learners.
  • Inspiring in their leadership style, willing to devote time to coach and develop colleagues while holding them accountable to measurable results.
  • Experienced in the International Baccalaureate model and knowledgeable about the language immersion environment (candidates who are bilingual in one of DCI’s core languages are strongly preferred).
  • A self-reflective leader who understands the effects of race, class, ethnicity, income, gender identity and other issues of difference in our society and has personally worked in similar communities to ensure all students have an opportunity to achieve their personal dreams of college and career success.
  • Knowledgeable about the academic and social-emotional needs of adolescents especially as related to supporting special education students, those who have experienced emotional trauma, students of color, students living in poverty, and English language learners.
  • Familiar with the DC public charter school landscape.
  • A strong written and oral communicator who is able to engage students, parents and faculty in dialogue and speak in a clear and authentic manner about the school’s goals and priorities.
