Bayfield is a safe, vibrant community with a small town feel striving to become a diverse, multigenerational community. It maintains its values while progressively pursuing ongoing sustainability of economic resources, natural resource stewardship and livability. The climate boasts moderate temperatures and low humidity year round. Most snowfall is from January through March. Bayfield’s elevation is 6,900 feet, which contributes to the well-defined seasons.

Vallecito Lake is ten miles north of Bayfield and Navajo Lake is 18 miles southeast. The Weminuche Wilderness, San Juan National Forest and BLM lands surround the town and provide hiking, backpacking, camping, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, fishing and hunting opportunities.

Two ski resorts are within a one and a half hour drive. Wolf Creek ski area is east and Durango Mountain Resort is north of Durango on Highway 550. The San Juan National Forest provides ample opportunity for cross country skiing.

To provide excellence in academics with student-centered instruction while concurrently maintaining a safe environment that provides all students with the opportunity to develop intellectually, emotionally and physically; assisting them to be productive community members.

With the passage of a local bond in November 2016, the district has been awarded a Building Excellent Schools Today (BEST) grant of $8.568 million from the Colorado Department of Education to address health and safety deficiencies, overcrowding and site issues, primarily at Bayfield Elementary Primary School (BEPS), as well as Bayfield Elementary School (BES) and Bayfield Middle School (BMS).
