THE COMMUNITY

Located at the western end of Fremont County, School District RE-3 includes five small communities, Cotopaxi, Texas Creek, Deer Mountain, Coaldale, and Howard. The district is located along the Arkansas River at the base
of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain Range, approximately halfway between Salida and Canon City on U.S. Hwy 50.

Ranching, rafting, recreation, tourism, and the Colorado Department of Corrections employ many people. The recreational opportunities are numerous. Fishing, hunting, backpacking, camping, four wheeling, river rafting, and skiing, are available within an hour’s drive. The climate in this area of the Arkansas River is known as the “Banana Belt,” with mild winters and warm but comfortable summers.

Nearby, Salida and Canon City provide necessary services for our communities, both with hospitals and great doctors. For the occasional visit to larger cities, Colorado Springs and Pueblo are 90 minutes east.


THE SCHOOL DISTRICT

Cotopaxi Consolidated Schools have a student population of 208, Pre K-12th grades. The Colorado Preschool Project helps supply most of the revenue for the preschool, which operates the same hours as the K-12 school: 7:59 a.m. - 4:03 p.m. Kindergarten through fifth grades are self-contained, and the sixth through twelfth grades are departmentalized. Most teachers carry some extra duty assignments, and most secondary teachers teach in more than one subject area. Cotopaxi school is a champion for student and staff wellness.

We incorporate best practices which support and engage our students. Our small class size allows for teachers to really get to know their students, which creates a safe, supportive school community. With low student-teacher ratios, both schools have been recognized numerous times at the state and national level for academic success. High school students can take dual credit classes through Pueblo Community College.

Students are served by 21 licensed teachers, 24 classified staff and two administrators. Cotopaxi Schools belong to the South-Central BOCES, located in Pueblo. The retention rate for employees is high. Cotopaxi was one of the first districts in Colorado to begin using a four-day school week in 1980, and uses Fridays for teacher staff development, parent-teacher conferences and teacher workdays. Extra- curricular activities are offered starting after 4 p.m. on school days as well as on weekends. This affords our students with more classroom time.

The district uses a variety of programs to enhance student achievement. These include: Reading First, Every Child a Writer, Every Day Math, Stand up Math, and College Preparatory Math. A very low dropout rate, high graduation rate and above-average number of graduates who seek post-secondary education bring pride to the community. The district earned “School of Distinction” status by state and accreditation standards three of the last five years.

      • Experience in curriculum development, instruction and assessments in standards-based educational systems.
      • Understanding of Colorado school finance and law.
      • Demonstration of strong leadership skills, visionary leadership and development of short and long-term goals.
      • Understanding of the rural community lifestyle and culture.
      • Honesty and openness in personal interactions and professional business relations.
      • Focus of administrative decisions based on educating the whole student. Balancing priorities between academics and extra-curricular programs.
      • Ability to successfully interact with staff, students, parents, community members and the school board members.
