Approx 250 students

Effective: July, 2018Stoughton Public Schools

TITLE: Elementary School Principal

• Master’s degree plus advanced graduate study and certification as an elementary school principal
• Administrative experience preferred, but not required
• At least five years of successful experience as a teacher at the elementary school level
• Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent may find appropriate and acceptable

REPORTS TO: Superintendent of Schools and Deputy Superintendent

SALARY RANGE: Competitive

• Assistant Principal, teaching staff and paraprofessionals
• All professional and support staff
• Other resource and service personnel while functioning in the elementary schools

JOB GOAL: To develop, implement, supervise, and evaluate the total learning experience for elementary school students, and provide educational leadership to the staff, parents, and students, assuming full responsibility for all aspects of the school program.


I. Effective Instructional Leadership
A. Facilitates the development of a shared mission and vision
B. Encourages and uses a variety of strategies to assess and monitor student performance
C. Applies current principles, practices, and research to foster effective teaching
D. Leads the renewal of curriculum and instructional programs in conjunction with the Deputy Superintendent, and in alignment with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and the Common Core of Learning
E. Promotes and models the effective use of instructional technologies
F. Holds teachers accountable for having high standards and positive expectations that all students can perform at high levels
G. Works with teachers and other staff to supervise and evaluate their performance, using performance standards, and to identify areas for growth
H. Supports ongoing, sustained professional development

II. Effective Organizational Leadership
A. Applies research and organizational leadership skills, including decision-making processes
B. Demonstrates communication skills that are clear, direct, and responsive
C. Creates a positive, informed climate for collegial teaching and learning
D. Facilitates constructive change
E. Plans for, models, and encourages collaboration and shared decision-making
F. Applies strategic planning techniques that foster systemic approaches and result in sound decisions, e.g. School Improvement Plan

III. Effective Administration and Management
A. Effectively carries out personnel selection, supervision, evaluation, and management functions for the school or district
B. Applies current knowledge of policy formation and legal requirements within the scope of his/her responsibility
C. Applies current knowledge of fiscal management policy and practices within the scope of his/her responsibility, including effective budget development and management
D. Applies current knowledge of auxiliary programs (such as transportation, food services, pupil personnel services, maintenance, and facilities management) within the scope of his/her responsibility
E. Uses appropriate technologies to administer his/her responsibilities
F. Assumes responsibility for the safety and security of the school

IV. Promotion of Equity and Appreciation of Diversity
A. Strives to ensure equity among programs and learning opportunities for staff, students, and parents
B. Demonstrates appreciation for and sensitivity to the diversity among individuals

V. Effective Relationships with the Community
A. Assesses the needs of parents and community members and involves them in decision-making
B. Promotes partnerships among staff, parents, business, and the community
C. Interprets, articulates, and promotes the vision, mission, programs, activities, and services of the school/district

VI. Fulfillment of Professional Responsibilities
A. Demonstrates enthusiasm for his/her learning
B. Demonstrates and promotes an atmosphere of respect for self and others
C. Models ethical behavior
D. Sets deadlines and submits reports that are complete, accurate, and on time
