Job Description

Education:                           High School Diploma or High School Equivalency plus additional specialized training in the plumbing and heating trades.


Qualifications:                     Experience with complex heating and cooling systems, working with plumbing and pipe fitting, human relation skills, and the ability to lift over sixty (60) pounds.   Must possess a valid driver's license. Must have or have the ability to obtain a Grade 'C' Boiler License (Low Pressure) and a City of Grand Forks Mechanical Installers License.  Additional consideration will be given for other certification such as a Journeyman Plumbers license, Universal Technician Certification, or other Grade of Boiler license.


Experience:                         Experience with boilers preferred.  Emphasis will be placed on quality of experience.


Reports To:                         Maintenance Supervisor, Buildings and Grounds.


Job Goal:                              Safely provide installation, maintenance, and repair work for complex HVAC systems at multiple locations throughout Grand Forks and the Grand Forks Air Force Base schools.



  1. Installs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs complex heating and cooling systems.  Equipment includes water heaters, boilers, domestic water systems, thermostats, pressure switches, condensate traps, gas valves, air compressors, and other pneumatic/direct digital control devices.  Work shall be completed within all applicable codes.
  2. Troubleshoots problems with HVAC equipment and develop a preventative maintenance program for heating and cooling systems.  
  3. Analyze and understand complex technical documentation such as wiring diagrams, blue prints, engineering drawings, code books, work orders, maintenance and repair manuals.
  4. Assess mechanical performance of systems and be able to determine cause.  This includes reading diagnostic test readings from mechanical equipment and be able to develop a repair strategy.
  5. Knowledge of tools, materials, and associated equipment used to maintain HVAC equipment.
  6. Completes other duties as assigned by the supervisor.


Work Schedule:  Monday - Friday 7 am - 3:30pm 


Wage:  Based on experience 


Evaluation:                        Annual written evaluation by the supervisor.
